Damn! I Won Half a Gun Last Night.

Never won anything in my life before.

Last night in my small hometown, we had the 2nd annual Friends of the NRA banquet. A friend of mine couldn't attend, but he gave me $20 to purchase a raffle ticket for him (they have raffles for lots of items, including guns). I decided to buy one ticket for myself as well. After much reflection, I decided that determining which ticket was who's, and the potential for conflict, was just too great. Even if I bought tickets for different items, and marked the owners name on the ticket, I wouldn't feel right if "my" ticket won, and I had to tell my friend that "his" ticket lost.

So, I bought two raffle tickets for the same item, put them both in my pocket, and decided that we would share, and share alike. Damn! So now I guess I'll put a fair market value on the gun, and give my friend the option of me buying his half, or him buying my half. Seems like a fair way of dividing the spoils.

And in case anyone is wondering, the item in question is a full size Springfield XD-M, in 40 S&W.

That's a heck of a raffle prize. I have been looking at picking one of those up for myself.

SA makes some decent firearms, and the grips are usually a little smaller than my fav, the Glock.

Or, you could sell it and split the proceeds. That way, neither of you has to pay anything to reap the profits.

5.5-7.7 lb trigger pull seems high- is that normal?

I say sell or trade it for a Glock... but that's just me, I'm kinda partial to Glocks :D

Nice, I rarely win things either. It looks a lot like a Glock, but I have never shot one so I couldn't comment as to how it shoots. I do love Glocks though. Most of the guns from the top companies are good; it really comes down to preference.

How the heck did *that* inspire a red-chicklet ? Hey mods, how about changing it so everyone can see who sent chicklets, not just the mods?

I agree. I'm still trying to figure out this thanks and reputation thing. I've seen some of Jerry's other posts (just kidding - sort of;)) that were lots more deserving!:D

This whole anonymous thing just doesn't seem right. If someone is gonna zing you, they should at least have the balls to do it publicly. I think that would cut down on frivolous "red-chicklets".

Sounds good to me. However, I do have my own range, and to be honest, shooting handguns is one of the few things I'm reasonably good at. So if a shooting competition was to decide the winner of the handgun, then I could have just called the guy and told him his ticket was a looser.

But guess what. I called the guy this afternoon with the news, and he said for me to just keep it. He said he had never won anything before, so he was sure his ticket was the looser!

Damn again! Just when I get so fed up with humanity that I loose all hope, and half expect him to insinuate that maybe his ticket was the real winner, my faith in mankind is rekindled. With that Gander, Newfoundland story I watched, and now this (and maybe a bottle of pinot noir), I'm just felling all warm and fuzzy inside.

Of course I declined his offer for me to keep the gun. We'll get together and work something fair out.

I'll help you out, I'll pay the cost of both of your raffle tickets, plus shipping and you send me the gun :) My friend is a gunsmith at a local shop so he can handle the transfer and paperwork.

Yea, I'd say that's fairly average for this type of handgun. Better than some - worse than others. I'm not an expert on XD's, but I think a regular XD is around 7.5 lbs, while the XD-M is around 5.5. I have a digital trigger pull gauge I can measure it with, if anyone wants.:)

Trigger pull weight - to a large degree - is dependent on two things: the type of trigger system and the purpose of the gun in question. A self defense handgun typically has a heavier trigger pull than a competition or target handgun. A DAO (Double Action Only) trigger typically is heavier, has a longer reset, and more travel than a single action trigger pull of a SAO (Single Action Only) or a TDA (Traditional Double Action).

There. That's the easy part. Now for the confusing part. A Glock is considered a DAO, while an XD is considered a SAO. But if someone (even an expert) were to compare the trigger pulls of a Glock and an XD side by side, they would swear that the triggers were near identical. Both the Glock and XD are striker fired. What differentiates the two is what happens when the trigger is pulled.

When the slide is racked on a Glock, the striker is partially precocked, and pulling the trigger on the Glock performs two tasks, or "double" tasks: One it finishes cocking the striker, and two it releases the striker.

On an XD, racking the slide fully cocks the striker. So pulling the trigger only performs one task, a "single" task, which is releasing the striker. So while one is a DAO, and the other is technically a SAO, functionally they are nearly identical.

Wait. What was the question?

That is also why I don't like the smaller Glocks, or other compact auto's. I hate when the grip only goes down about 3/4 the width of my hand.

check out the A&G grip extender, or add a pinky or +1 extension to the mags... all the smaller glocks accept the magazines from the larger glocks. I've shot my Glock 26 with a magazine from my glock 19 or my glock 17 in it and it was still comfortable. Nothing like carrying a Glock 26 with a 17 round spare mag full of gold dots or Winchester Ranger SXT ammo :D

That's the only problem with the XD. I haven't held one and I need to see how it fits. Hey James NM, after you get a feel for it, could you post some thoughts on how it shoots? It isn't like I am going to compete with it, it is just for "around the house" :) Anyone else fire one of these? Guns & Ammo had a pretty good review of one of these a few months back which is why I am considering one. It is in the same price range as a 1911 though.

My buddy is a competitive shooter and he said he could customize the grip to my hand regardless of what I buy :D
