Mitsubishi Rear Projection Picture Problems

I have a 65 inch Mitsubishi rear projection TV I bought in 2004. While watching it last night, with no previous similar problems, the picture became bizarre. At the top left quadrant there was a sweeping line which formed a type of bubble area. In the bubble the color was distorted, mostly red.

In the middle part of the screen there were double images, like ghost images but very exaggerated. About 1/4 of a person's face was doubled.

Any text on the screen( as well as the images) was also doubled and the text on top would be green and on the bottom would be purple.

I ruled out the cable box as the problem as switching to the Wii input yielded the same picture. I rest the system as well as the audio/video with no success. I checked the cables and they were secure.

After restting, I did get a brief message at the bottom about a lack of cable color input, the typical message you get when the cables are disconnected. I checked them again and they were fine.

Is this a bulb issue? Any help would be apporeciated. Thanks

this is a convergence problem. I'm not exactly sure if you have a seriousl problem or not but you can go into your menu for set up I think and calibrate it..

you might remember when the guys delivered it they went to a screen with plus signs all over it and the align them all up to be perfect I think its red, blue and green and when they are aligned they turn white

i have a 55" mitsu and am worried i may have similar issues soon.. there could be a $400 repair to get parts if its more than just alignment that needs to happen.

I'll be looking forward to see how this works out for you since mine is 6 years old as well.

I tried to calibrate the screen shows a wavy fishnet type arrangement. In the portion of the screen that I described in the first post as a line creating abubble, it looks like the netting has slumped down and the scren is concave. The calibration didn't do anything to remedy this and other boards indicate it may require replacing the convergence board

I think you can go through each line and make little adjustments.. i'm not sure if that can be attmepted before doing the repair..

on the upside if you are capable I read that the parts were cheap.. like under $100 bucks

even paying to have it doen its cheper than buying a new 65"TV unless you want to use it as an excuse to get a plasma :)

You almost certainly need new convergence IC's. No adjustment is going to fix that. Parts are cheap, labor isn't. If you can do it yourself you'll save money. Otherwise it is a $300-400 repair. If the TV is in good shape and the tubes are not worn then it may very well be worth repairing at least once. Convergence is by far the most common issue with those sets.

Thanks very much. I am completely incapable of doing the repair myself and while $400 is low enough to justify having the repair done, I am seriously thinking about using it as an excuse to get a new TV. This one is great, but it has a large cabinet, and lacks an HDMI input. The HD is good but not as sharp as some of the newer sets I have seen. In addition, there are some video games that do not function on rear projection and I would like to be bale to use them.

Do you suggest palsma as the way to go?
