Front speakers on wood floor

What is the best solution for speakers on a wood floor. My two front speakers currently sit directly on the wood, no stands. Would it help to put rubber feet or a piece of cloth or anything under them? The speakers are around 17" tall.

With speakers that short, you really need stands that put the tweeter at ear level. There's a number of reasons, but the biggest one is the high frequencies will be unnaturally diminished compared to the rest of the sound. You can also get crossover effects that cause a suckout in the midrange.

If stands really aren't an option, you should put something under the speakers just to protect the floor. Radio Shack sells some rubber feet for pretty cheap that work well.

I just read a link about 'hard floor, soft ceiling' and it sounded logical- the ceiling can be treated with 2"-4" of absorptive material but obviously, the floor can't.

I've heard the same thing when I was having problems with ceiling bounce. Brian Pape chimed in and recommended acoustic panels above head. I have heard that placing ceramic tiles under your mains helps produce a great sound for carpeted floors. Not sure how you would deal with that on hardwood floors - might be a situation where if you it isn't producing any bad sound, to leave it.
