Silly ethernet cable question

Yes, cable is much better than DSL, at least from my own experiences, and from what my other friends have experienced as well.

So I am way slow?

This is AT&T DSL, the next to the best package they offered.

What should I do? When I called them and told them of slow issues, they said they tested and everything is fine.
Try the best package then. I think it's $35/month? I use that, and I get over 5 mbps DL. I used to have cable years ago, and DSL is fast enough for me, is a bit cheaper, and runs way smoother where I live now for some reason. I'm pretty sure all the neighbors use cable though. I guess I also chose ATT because I get one single bill for landline+cell phone+ internet.

Cable is faster though. I don't need it, but you might like it.

Can you just get cable internet even if you don't have cable? I use DirecTV for everything else.

Of course. Find out who the provider is where you live, and ask the neighbors how they like it, I guess . . . or research online, Iono.

Yes you can. I only use cable for the Inet. It costs me almost $50 a month though, but I have all the speed I could need for right now.

The next better package would be FIOS (Fiber Optic) which I know Verizon is working on getting out everywhere. I have seen available speeds on that up to 50 mbps  Of course it's crazy expensive though.

I wanted to switch my internet and cable to FIOS but they are not in my area.

If you're getting a slower download than upload that right away should tell you something's wrong.

There is NOTHING wrong with DSL, it is just as good as cable and more reliable in my opinion.

Your connection is being choked at some point, a good place to start is your router. You might have some settings wrong which is causing the slowness. If it's a wireless router, make sure you have a security option enabled to keep your connection secure from neighbours.

You might want to try buying a new router, they're pretty inexpensive these days.

Says the guy who cant strip wires :p:D
DSL is very limited by infrastructure, provider systems and implementation. Cable has far less bandwith issues.. At least here in the US, I cant speak for you guys up there, BTW is Internet like health care?:D We have two citys here in Florida that are going WiMax free soon.

One of the advantages that they talk about with DSL is that you have a dedicated connection so that you are guaranteed your top allowed speed at all times. However bandwidth is usually lower than cable.

With cable you share your connection with your neighbors (junction box somewhere outside of your house that splits the connection to you and neighbors) so that during peak hours of use you may not get all of your bandwidth. However you get more allowable bandwidth with cable.

I've never had any problems with slow connection high usage, even though I live in a condo complex with about 150 other units. But then again I'm not sure how they have all of ours split out (perhaps an outside box for every 10 units or 15 units, not sure)

Well, see, I don't really know how to go about checking the router. It is security enabled. It seems like it used to be quicker than it is now. Maybe I should just bump up to the next higher package and see if that helps.

This is with regular road runner, I'll do another test later on when there is less network traffic in the neighborhood.

I have gone through the full progression:
Dial Up
DSL
Cable
Cable (different provider)
Fios

I'm not sure I see a difference between Cable & Fios service, but I saw a huge jump from DSL to cable. I did some research on this in college a dozen years ago, and the bottom line is that DSL has a lot of restrictions and significant slowdown issues based upon distance and simply can't touch cable/fios speeds.

Of course, real, reliable 300+kbs connectivity isn't a lousy Internet experience, but it is well short of what cable can deliver for what should be a similar price.

I didn't notice a significant difference between cable and FiOS until I started downloading media. Web pages seemed to load in about the same amount of time, a factor that is probably attributed to my system limitations themselves, more so than internet speed. But I've got the 25/15 package and music/video load times are lightning quick now, love it!

Incidentally I had a major issue with Verizon a while back and vowed that I would never sign on with them, mostly due to very poor customer service, advertising schemes that were approaching fraudulent, etc. A couple of friends, one of whom's father works for Verizon as an installation tech, told me that the company had changed its management structure and had placed a lot of emphasis on improving customer service. Why? Because oddly enough they were losing customers, go figure. Reluctantly, I called them up because my cable providers rates kept going up with no end in sight, and signed the deal. At this point, I'd be happy to recommend the service to anyone who has it in their area, I don't think you'll be disappointed with either the internet speed or TV service.
