When a bad day gets worse...

Do you ever wake up and just know that it's gonna be "one of those days?"

Monday night.. well actually Tuesday morning.. I was up until about 2:30am trying to finish a project for an early meeting first thing Tuesday. I finallly get to bed then suddenly I hear some chirping... wake up... the power's out and every single fire alarm in the house is chirping non-stop. My wife and daughter can sleep through anything,... not me unfortunately... so I'm up now. I rollled around in bed, but no use. I get everyone up for the morning and go to take a shower... no hot water. It was 27 degrees in Tampa which is just stupid. I go out in the cold garage... of course... the pilot light went out. No power, no hot water. I freeze my a$$ off trying to figure out how to light it back up since in FL you really don't worry about these sorts of things. An hour later, I have hot water... still no power... but there's trucks outstide working on it.

No coffee, no toast... nothing... but I'm pleased to have taken a hot shower in my house that's now sitting at 54 degrees. I go to leave... can't open the garage door...no power still. I go to pull on the cord for the release and along with the pull comes the cord and some plastic piece and a bolt that hits me in the eye. Can't open the garage door and now I can't leave. I get the ladder and start to home repairs in my suit. About 30 minutes later I can release the door. The things weighs a ton because of all the hurricane reinforcing but I get the door up... but appparently... not far enough... so it comes right back down and hits me in the shoulder... the one I just had surgery on and makes a nice wet blace mark on my coat. I go change, and I finally get on my way. Oh and the power came on as I'm pulling out of the garage... no joke. Of course, there's accidents and my 55 minute commute takes an hour and 20 minutes. Work sucked all day and I can't even talk about it.

Driving home all I can think about is getting a fire going and just relaxing. The wood I bought is a bit wet, so I've been using starter logs to get it going. It just makes it easier. 3 stores later, I finally find a box and I'm on my way home. Surprisingly the fire was up and running fairly quickly. I thought this might be time for a change and perhpas instead of Long Island Ice Teas or wine, I'll make us some Espresso. I go to our coffee bar and pull everything out... press the button the ridculously overpriced Capresso thing and nothing,. It hummed but no water flowed. I didn't even bother to look at it at this point. I just smiled, turned it off and walked away amused at the $1200 paper weight sitting on their.

I then decide to go relax and play on the internet a bit and get my mind together. I go to turn on my computer... nothing,. Check all the plugs... nothing. I go through the hassle of pulling the thing out unplugging it from the surge protector (that I will soon find out completely did not work) and plug it into a different socket. Push the botton . Nothing. I look at it... much like you do when your car dies and you stare aimlessly into the engine compartment as if you actually know what's wrong, let alone how to fix it. I notice the light on the power supply is blnking. Hmmm... so I grab my laptop and go online and read all sorts of things to try... nothing.

At this point, I'm exhausted, hungry, cold, and about to kill someone. I sat quietly in my office doing nothing and decided just to go to bed. I hit the pillow without dinner at about 9:30.

So now... will today be a continuation or a new start. Okay... Rant/Vent over.

Sounds like Florida is a post-Apocalyptic nightmare when it gets a couple degrees below freezing.:D

Today's a new day and there's no guarantees about tomorrow, either. Just roll with it.

Jesus man - hell of a day. Hope things turn around for you quick!

Dave: You wouldn't believe what a big deal it is down here when the mercury drops below 32F....people start losing their minds, and there's panic in the streets - but only for a few minutes, because nobody can take the cold, so they all scurry back indoors and post nonsensical remarks on their Facebook status updates about how frigid the weather is.

Did you check the breaker panel? Some of the breakers may have tripped.

I feel like Carl Hiaasen could really work this into a nice plot line for a new book.

It could be worse, you could live in Haiti. Sorry to hear about your bad day, just take a few steps back and a deep breath, it will all be over as soon as the liquor hits your lips!

Things have stabllized. Went with a buddy to have some drinks... a $167 bar tab later... things are fine. Computer's still broke, but other than that, I think the storm has passed.

Oh man...

Thanks for the replay!

It reminded me of when I lived in Orlando. When it was supposed to drop below 32 degrees one night, everyone was freaking out. The radio was going on about "dress in layers..." "warning signs of frost-bite..." "freezing pipes..." etc. It was hilarious! It was supposed to drop to something like 30 degrees. I was like "go put on a sweatshirt."

Hell...I spent Jan-May in Fargo. Some mornings it was -35 F on the thermometer and the wind chill was -65 to -70. One day we walked out of the plant at +5 degrees with no gloves on because it was warm. Serious!

But go enjoy your drinks. That was a bad day!

I understand how alarming it is for Floridians to have this cold of weather, it's only a small taste of what we Northerners get. At the same time, many people live down their because they hate cold climate.

I hope it was a peeler bar.
That means strip joint. :)

More often than not people down here don't know what that means.

I kind of like 'The Royal Windsor Ballet' myself even though I never go ... anymore.
My girl would pitch a fit.

It's also a relative thing.

Everything down here is built for hot weather. It's concrete, stone floors, I don't even have proper heat just a reverse-cycle thing that doesn't work that well. My office has no heat either, so what ends up happening is everyplace is pretty cold so you never actually warm up. Like, up north places have the heat on and its 70 degrees so you can warm up.

On top of that, no one has the right clothing. I wear shorts and a t-shirt to work everyday, I barely even own pants. I have two pair of pants.

That said, it's like 50 today and I'm still warm. I must run hot, but I grew up in the North so maybe its in my blood.

The one morning my garage door seized from thermal contraction. I had to force it up manually, and, like chris said, the hurricane garage doors aren't light.

So, I think most of what makes it suck down here when it gets cold is we just aren't prepared or built for it.

Thank God for the ocean breezes and sub tropical climate. Cant imagine the difference between Orlando/Tampa and South Florida during the cold, its insane.

Thank God for the ocean breezes ...
... 100% humidity and leg sweat. Yeah, that's right, leg sweat. That's a kind of hot that is insane. :(

The only thing that gets me up here is cold rain. That will make you snap to attention like nothing else.
As for the rest of it, I can cope alright.

I don't mind the cold so much. It's a nice change and I like having a fire goiing. The only thing I hate is the morning coming out of the shower. Beyond that, it kills the bugs that eat your lawn, kills the weeds... so that's good. Then again, I probably lost about a $1,000 in plants. I live on a corner lot and have a fairly expansive landscape scheme stretching all the way around the house. Looking at one of the beds today I could tell that not one thing would be alive in the next couple of weeks. Oh well. It's good for the local nursery where I'm a regular.

We did not hit the strip club yesterday. I needed focused drinking. We hit this small place near where we live. They carry a lot of different higher end tequilas. it added up quickly.

Today is a new day!
