Denon help - to upgrade or not

Hey everyone,

I have been reading these forums for a while now, but never posted. Alot of great info on here so I thank everyone for the knowledge I have gained from the site! Here is my dilemma.

I currently have a Denon avr-2807 that I just hooked up in my new living room. The room is about 16' x 16' and has a cathedral ceiling with 1 wall open to the kitchen.

My speaker setup is the Klipsch quintet III's with a PA-120 sub. I have ran the auto setup 3 times and the results are far from stellar. For some reason it sets my sub at -4db and the thing barely makes a sound. I also have an avr-687 and I am having the same issue with. My fronts/centers/rears sound good, but I have no low end. I hooked my sub up to my dads old sony 5.1 receiver and his entire house sounds like the walls are falling down. I hooked up my avr-687 at his house and the sub would barely rumble. It is like the low end sounds aren't being sent correctly to the sub.

I have been looking at getting something new since my luck with Denon has not been very good. I have been looking at the Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH and some of the yamaha units but am still undecided. Unless I am missing something with the Denon setup I am lost. I am using the Audyssey EQ but I modified the channel levels to get some more sound. I have to turn the volume up to -15 or so before it gets loud.

Any help I can get is appreciated. I have been racking my brain trying to figure this out.

Thanks, Rich

I should have included that in my post, sorry. All of the speakers are set to small and the sub is set to LFE+main.

Id set the sub, to sub only first. Then set the sub manually to run @ +2 and turn the gain on the sub to about 11 oclock. If this doesnt give you an improvement and your receiver has preouts for the mains, there a couple of things to try.

I'd start with turning off the LFE+Main setting and let your subhandle the bass frequencies - use the Audyssey auto setup properly - follow the excellent guide here

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=14456895

If you still find the bass a bit low, increase the sub about 5db from where Audyssey sets it and you should be happy again.

Also, try and make sure you are seated in the centre of your square room - chances are your bass won't be good there. About 6ft from your backwall would be a decent starting seating position.

Don't rely on Audyssey auto set-up to do all the work for you. Turn Audyssey off and use the above recommendations to do your own manual set-up. The 2807 is a great unit!
