Which one should I pick up? I have a tuner and speakers so those arent a problem if I end up going with the 500M.

The KRP-500M is capable of delivering the more accurate picture. It also uses less power and supposedly has even slightly better black levels.

The only advantage of the PDP-5020FD is that it has more HDMI inputs (4 vs. 2) and it comes with a table-top stand and speakers (the 500M comes with neither).

So long as you can get a wall mount or a stand for the 500M and you already have seperate speakers, the 500M is the better display and you should get that one.

Correct, ^^. What makes Pioneer's KRP-500M a better choice is the following:

1. KRP-500M are actually Elite Signature Series for Europe and Asia and were adopted by Pioneer USA near the end of their USA production.

2. Advantages are:
a) Pure mode for paring with Blu-ray
b) Elite color filtering and non-glare coating
c) About 2" thinner and draws less current than the 5020FD

Here's two more not well known advantages. Pioneer used their 10 generation glass in the KRP-500Ms and the PDP-5020Fd has the 9 generation glass.

KRP-500Ms can be upgraded to enable the ISFccc day/night modes for the best possible calibration. The upgrade patch can be purchsed at www.controlcal.com . The upgrade patch may void the warranty so it's buyer beware on this very cool upgrade.

All Pioneer Kuro models are very limited in supply, but most remaining dealers offer them with Pioneer's table top pedestal stand and some have the original speakers available.

Seems like the best remaining authorized dealers with inventory are:

www.vanns.com
www.beachcamera.com
www.valueelectronics.com

Frankly, as I scan across various forums I am really surprised there are not more grabbing at the KRP.

I think a good reason for that is that the KRP models were never advertised and they don't really show up on Pioneer's website unless you specifically go looking for them. They are the "hidden" Kuro models :p But they are a darn good deal! People are pretty much only finding out about them through forums, so they've been a great little "secret" for folks in the know :D

I meant even the 'insiders' like us.. but you are right, many come on forums for advice after they already bought a display.

The 5020FD (and 6020FD) also lacks the advanced picture settings "Pro Adjust".

Hi Sawz. :)

If you mean professional calibrated... no and I'm not planning on do it... why ??? Because color accuracy is already great on the 500M's (Yep, it can be improved very close to perfection with a professional calibration but...) it's more than enough for me. :)

and the patch install done
Not yet but I'm going to install it in few weeks. I really want to have the IFSccc Modes (Day & Night).

and how did you go about your 150 hour break-in Thanks , sawz..

I usually break-in watching regular programming. That's what I did with all my previous (5) Panasonic Plasmas. With the 500M, I watched normal programming as well but also played the Break-In DVD (Evangelo's) when I wasn't watching the TV.

I'm doing great. :) :) :)

Unfortunately D-Nice only posts Ref settings for "PURE" mode which looks great for most movies but a bit dull for other sources. I'm only watching Blu-ray and few regular DVDs at the moment. I cancelled cable months ago and was planning to get an OTA HD Receiver to watch TV programming but I still don't know which model to get. :(

So I can't really give you any suggestion as I've never seen the 500M playing TV programming. :(

EDIT: Here's the Model that I might buy.

I guess it will be a trial and error deal, as I feel a little more zing on the espn and fox sports channels is in order, I do realize that his settings are really just right for blu-rays . I wonder if his settings and a simple switch to sports mode would achieve the look I am talking about, yep trial and error, lol.

Why don't you just rent or buy a calibration disc? Hmm. And then when you calibrate, plug the BDP into the input that will normally be for HDTV. Turn on all of the lights, and open all of the windows. :) Calibrate. It will look brighter on any given Sunday after you are done. :D

Or of course just tweak to taste. In fact, I would perhaps try that calibration thing, and then tweak to taste. Write down settings before cal, after cal, and after tweaks.
