No video signal ..... HELP!

OK so last night I decided to hook up my DVD recorder to my FIOS box. I have had the recorder for about two years now and up until now I only used it as a second DVD player. I connected to a Yamaha receiver into one of the available audio/video inputs. The audio is coming through loud and clear but I cannot get a picture. Its driving me crazy. Spent almost two hours scratching my head on this last night.

Using a Yamaha V465. Lot's of inputs in the back but so far only using two HDMI inputs (PS3 and FIOS HD receiver) and the HDMI out to the TV. That's it. Everything else is empty. Tried connecting DVD to every possible audio/video input back there and I get no picture.

Any ideas??

Thanks-
Frank

Hi, Frank.

The RX-V465 won't convert video signals, so you have to use the same video connection to the TV as you use to connect a component to the receiver.

In other words, if you aren't connecting the DVD recorder to the receiver using an HDMI connection, that's the reason why you can't see any video. If you are connecting the DVD recorder to the receiver using HDMI, then let us know and we'll look into this more.

If you are using a different video connection, then you would need to run the same connection from the receiver to the TV (if you want to keep running the video through the receiver).

So what you are saying is, if the DVD player is connected to the receiver via RCA in, then I must RCA out to the TV ??

I really appreciate your response. This was driving me nuts Sunday night

I have 2 questions about this problem. I understand what you are saying perfectly, but would it be possible to connect 2 different outputs to the TV from the Receiver and have the receiver automatically choose what output to use based on the component? My second question is, at what point to reveivers begin to decode video signals? (Are there other entry level receivers that will, or would you have to go to a higher end one in order to do so?)

Welcome to the forum!

That is actually exactly what they do.

My second question is, at what point to reveivers begin to decode video signals? (Are there other entry level receivers that will, or would you have to go to a higher end one in order to do so?)
Good question, and I don't have a list of them compiled. A great place to check is to look at the owner's manuals that are available online from the manufacturers. My recollection is that all of the manufacturers use easy-to-understand diagrams of the video flow and conversion within the receiver except for Marantz. Marantz just states it in wording, I think.

If you have a question about a particular model or models, just let us know.
