Need help on steam shower speakers

Hello, I'm in the process of building a steam shower. I'm installing Bose 131 marine speakers for music in the shower. I would like to know what you guys recommend for a stereo? I need one that can push these speakers and be as small as possible or even be installed in the wall. What i need out of it is to be able to listen to my ipod and the radio. Could I use a car stereo? Any help would be great. Thanks

I sure wouldn't put any electronics in there. I suggest keeping them some place dry, and using a wall mounted L pad or something similar in the shower, to control the volume.

A friend is installing speakers in the shower for a client- they use a sealed back-box. I'm not sure what the brand is, or how much they cost but I can find out.

I would be careful about putting a volume control in the areas where you would be wet and possibly grounded- if the worst happens, whoever is touching the control will become the load, which could be lethal. I would put the control outside of the shower in a location that can't be accessed while inside.

Nobody said that you were putting the stereo in the shower but a volume control is still connected to a device that runs on 120VAC and under the right circumstances, it can be lethal.

Any stereo will work but code requires that it's installed so that it's not possible to come into contact with any electrical conductor when in a wet area. Water dripping onto the shaft of a volume control can become a problem so it needs to be mounted outside of the shower area.

Also, if a volume control is used, it should be something like this:

It should also be mounted in a J-box, with all gaps and holes sealed to eliminate moisture from passing through and causing mold/mildew issues.

I'm no expert, nor am I an electrician, but it seems to me that whatever electronics you wind up with should be plugged into a GFI outlet.

Likewise, I'd use a remote control (which runs off of batteries) instead of a wired control.

Plugged into a GFCI, with a remote. Just as Mark suggested.

Sounds like the OP has to give more detail as to his expectations.

+1. These are fairly easy to find. Probably pretty generic though. I'm not sure how important the aesthetics of your room will be, but what you will get for 30-40 bucks is a waterproof junction box with holes to mate the box to PVC. You could build it into the wall so that only the faceplate shows if you are concerned with the way a box looks on the wall.

I prefer live shows in the shower. But I think there are plenty of water resistant solutions. They put speakers in boats after all.

I personally prefer the open door aimed speaker method. Just make sure never to use a toaster in the shower as the repercussions are pretty painful.

I suggest a different brand than blose. They tend to be way overpriced.
JBL Marine Series MS9200. JBLs come from a good speaker company that is known for their driver quality. I suggest you look into JBL/Infinity products instead of Blose. You can get them much cheaper and they will sound better.

There are plenty of Boss and JBL dashes as well.
