I rented UP earlier today and had some issues with the disk. For some reason I couldn't get subtitles or a menu to come up on my playstation 3.

I tried it in my windows 7 computer and same issue (using videolan which seems to ignore most restrictions on navigating the dvd).

Then I look at the files on the disk and notice a lot more 1GB files than there should be on a disk (estimated 16 at the time) but when I did select all and right clicked windows explorer froze. (tried this a couple times)

I then put the disk in my linux computer, the first drive I put it in did not even show a dvd being in the drive. The other drive actually recognized the disk. The final count on how much data there was on the disk was around 52.4GB (yes, this is a DVD).

Anyone else experience anything like this? I have had similar strange issues on a few dvds in the past but I forget which ones.

A final note, this is UP_US_RENTAL (up_us or us_up I forget which) and not the retail disk. I have heard other complaints about no menu on IMDB.

Edit:
If this belongs under dvd hardware or another category please go ahead and move the thread, I wasn't sure where to put it.

Edit 2:
And please note, I do not have any dvd copying software on either system, I know anydvd used to cause problems on some dvds for me and disabling it would fix the problems.

Edit 3:
I did take the movie back to Family Video and they were able to replicate it on their standalone DVD player so hopefully they will get in touch with someone about the issue

I have the DVD (and BD). I did notice that the DVD has a ton of 0.99 GB files, but my player says the disk is 7.37 GB (more in line with a DVD). It runs just fine on my PC.

I have the UP_US_RENTAL version and there is only a VIDEO_TS folder with 143 files. Total size of the DVD is 5.29 GB on a Windows 7 computer.

From what I can tell, there is not a title menu on this DVD, only advertisements and the movie.

It copied fine using AnyDVD and CloneDVD.

Don't look at disk properties, look at the files themselves. Column 1 is the line number (so there are 143 files and 144 lines of output) 2 is the size, and 3 is the name. I used the code box to avoid making this a massive post.

Code:

Edit:
One of my issues with this disk is there are NO accessible subtitles and videolan doesn't detect any closed captioning. I am not aware of what the back of the box says but isn't it legally required that one or the other be on a disk?

Also, when I had issues with anydvd on disks like this it was an older version of anydvd so it has probably been resolved.

Edit Again:
I just remembered the old problem I would experience. There would be 5 files with the same name listed (say 5 copies of VTS_01.VOB) and it would occur on multiple computers.

Making files appear larger than they really are is a copy protection scheme.

I don't know if not having closed captioning is illegal or not, but I am curious to see how the retail version differs from the rental.

Disney's response to me about the DVD issues

Dear Consumer,

Thank you for your e-mail regarding the absence of closed captions from your Up rental DVD. The captions were inadvertently left off of the rental DVD. We regret any inconvenience this may have caused. We are working diligently to rectify this situation by shipping the corrected product to our accounts and creating a consumer program to address this matter. Since not all retailers will be able to participate in this program we will contact you once we have the specifics confirmed.

In the meantime, please save the receipt or shipping confirmation and mail it to us at WDSHE Consumer Relations, Attn: "UP Rental" , PO Box 3100, Neenah, WI 54956, with your contact information (full name, home mailing address, phone number, email address) and we will contact you.

Please let us know if you have any other questions or comments. You may contact us via email at DisneyInfo@DisneyHelp.com <blocked::mailto:DisneyInfo@DisneyHelp.com> or via phone at 1-800-723-4763 Mondays 9:30-7:30 CST and Tuesday through Friday 9:30-6:30 CST.

We do appreciate your letting us try to assist you.

Allot to go through for a free rental. They couldn't just send you a coupon?

That was sort of my thought but I suppose people would end up sending in 50 requests from different email accounts otherwise. I don't know what the discount on the retail version is but that might be worth the hassle.
