It has been said that Sennheiser are the flagship of headphones. The HD650 I have read a variety of good reviews. Some of the reviews describe using different after market cables. Using a Headphone amplifier. The HD650's are mentioned that they need a break in period of 200-300 hours. If one has a desent Stereo with a headphone jack, why a headphone amp? And different cables. And if I need an extension cord (the coil type) would it degredate the sound quality?

The HD800 are now the flagship Sennheiser model but they are grossly overpriced. The HD650 is indeed a good headphone especially if you like a more laid back sound. This might not appeal to everyone. The HD650 have an impedance of 300 so some portable devices and receivers might have a more difficult time powering them, so these headphones might benefit from a headphone amp if you want to listen to high volumes.

Headphones do not need to breakin or burn in. Your brain and head will need an adjustment period to the sound and comfort of the headphones. There is no need to use after market cables for sound quality, it will have no impact. Many closed model headphones use coiled cables, they are especially useful in a studio or desk because the cord is more contained and stretches when needed. It will not degrade sound quality.

And I have looked into the HD800 prior to my posting. And 1300 dollars for headphones, for me anyway is somewhat gross. The next model down would be the 650. I am also considering RS180 or the 170's which are the wireless. They claim that RF runs on Sennheiser's "Kleer" of which there is no signal loss or hiss up to 100 to 300 feet. But if you are within the confines of your living room, garage, ect. the freedom of having no wires to trip over. Now the 100 to 300 feet, would I go out to the back 40 and mow the lawn. Perhaps not.

Oh yeah $1300 for the HD800 is just ridiculous. Personally I would never spend that much on a headphone. Stay away from wireless headphones, generally they are crap, expensive and not very good sounding compared to wired headphones. Also I would be skeptical about the claimed specs of the wireless headphones. Stick to wired headphones.

Unfortunately, I have not been to a headphone convention lately. Is the HD800 the same molded plastic of the past units? Or is the frame made from cast/machined metal alloy(s)? I just wonder -- for that price -- I would expect metal alloy and other high quality construction - not a silver painted plastic.

Then again..... Sennheiser used PLEATHER - not leather - on their top of the line super expensive Orpheus headphones.....and it was not even good pleather... it was the cheapest grade stuff you can get. LOL. On top of that build quality was just 'good', not great. A stark difference for example, compared to the closely priced Sony R10, which used the highest possible construction and materials, actually making it an item I long to own just for a display piece (yes, I have odd ideas of 'art').

They are a high quality headphone. But when I look what else I could buy for 4 grand, a headphone would not make that list. They are geared to a select niche group. Some of the Amazon reviews of the R10, errrr satire is quite funny.

"You see, these are magic headphones. When placed over your ears, they will instantly whisk you away to Happyland, where the streets are paved with gold, money falls from the sky, and sugar-plum fairies grant your every wish.
These mystical headphones also enable you to run faster than a speeding bullet, and leap tall buildings in a single bound.

All this for just under $4,000. What are you waiting for !!!!! "

"'tis true: these phones cured my sister of dysentery and cleansed my loins of pesky arachnids "

"All my life I'm been unattractive to women. I've tried everything in an effort to get the chicks. However, dressing like Harry Potter, buying a wicked Ford Focus, getting a job as a computer programmer, and learning to play the harp all failed to deliver on their promise of converting me into a babe magnet.
Nothing worked until I bought these headphones. Now the lovely ladies are swarming to me. They are worth every penny."

That is too funny...sometimes Amazon reviews crack me up. I remember reading some good ones for the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies book a while ago.

I'm quite happy with my HD555...for $90 they have a sound I enjoy.

I made a thread in the steam vent. Post any funny Amazon comments you find in there. :D

For that price I would expect the musician of my choice to come play right next to me. Wow.
