Any folks here have one of these. I'm tired of getting lost or needing directions and not having them.

I have one & absolutely love it. (I break the mold when it comes to being a “typical male” – I stop & ask for directions, as well as reading the instructions.) It’s about 4 years old, so the big issue is lack of updates. Maybe a GPS built into a cell phone would be updated more often? Be sure to check out how often the company offers updates & how much they cost.

Anyway, one of the really cool things is I can look up Where I need to go on Google Earth, and transfer the latitude & longitude into the GPS and it gets me right there.

Just get a Droid. It runs Android (Google's OS) and has Google's new turn by turn GPS navigation. A few of my friends just got one and they said they are really nice.

After my last 2 motorola experiences. I don't tink so. Besides I'm probably too cheapskate for that anyway.

Ecost has a tom-tom for around 60 bucks.

Sometimes the ability of the GPS to get you right to an address is hit or miss. I say if it allows lat/lon input, use Google Earth & go for it.

I researched reviews for a while, and settled on Garmin. I paid the extra money to have some worldwide maps preloaded, because if I did it later, the cost would be substantially more IIRC.

They're not all the same. It's like with receivers. Features vs performance vs other things. Size of display, how fast can it find you, how fast can it route, speech to text.

Mine has the speakers on the back, and the volume doesn't get very high, so I flip it backwards when driving. I do use it rarely.

If you use the reroute function (to avoid traffic), some units have been reviewed to do terrible jobs. Like get off the freeway exit, just to take side streets to the very next on-ramp. You won't know until it's too late.

You know, FWIW, I got by on maps for a very long time. The one I used was about $20 retail, and I'd buy one every 5 years, probably longer than that.

How do the reviews fare with that tom-tom? Linky?

I have a Garmin, and it does the job. There are a few glitches though. It has told me to turn where there is no onramp. It doesn't always pick the fastest route either. Seems to default to the shortest distance. It's definately better than my messed up sense of direction though! I'd be lost (literally) without it.

I'd recommend just staying home and getting DiGiorno.

I am a Blackberry user. I use the web browser when needing direction reference while starting out and the BB Maps App when needing en route location based help. It is not elegant and sometimes irksome, but, gets the job done without requiring one more gadget in my life.

Be very careful if you buy a 60 dollar GPS. Some of the cheap ones are complete garbage, I mean just absolutely terrible at roads, bad calculation rates, huge lag-times, inaccuracies with programming...

Also dont use it TOO much. I know people in DC who have lived here for 5+ years and if you took away their GPS, they couldn't find their a** from their elbow.

We have a Garmin 265wt.
It's ok, but not without it's problems.
Sometimes I'll test it out on a route I already know well; it gets me there, though not always the shortest or fastest way.
Other times it gets close, but will put us in front of an open field, a half mile from our destination.

They remind me of cell phones; not quite perfected yet. Seems to be a 70% success rate with it.

I have one of the newer ones. 8900 Curve.

But the 8900 is not 3G. If you want that, the new BB just out is the 9700 Bold.

Sure they are spendy, but they do every "core feature" exceptionally well and all "nice to haves" reasonably so. If one can get over the utalitarian design and no frills interface, it is actually a very well implemented converged device.

No way I'm spending 300 on a phone. That's money that could go to the theater build.;) Still I'm waiting for my plan to expire to get a MetroPCS plan.

Yeah, Blackberry's are great. Long battery life too. I tried the iPhone and the battery life was what put me over the edge to switch back to Blackberry.

Also, unrelated to this thread, but, Blackberry Enterprise works well.

Don't get a phone to use for gps. They are sloooooww and more inaccurate, other than the droid my wife has. I bought a Mio C520 3 years ago and still use it. Took me from MD to FL and back without a hiccup. Only two things.

Didn't come with a car charger, but it used mini usb, I had one form an old cell phone that works.

Battery now only lasts about 30 minutes, but hey, I only use it in the car and leave it plugged in.

It boots fast and has text to voice which is a must have. Plays mp3's, has an SD/MMC slot, shows pictures and has bluetooth to connect to cellphone. I never use those features anyway, but still, that's a lot for a gps made back in 06.

The don't make that model anymore, but this is the newer version. http://us.mio.com/products-car-navigation-moov500-overview.htm

This is the one I have http://www.amazon.com/Mio-4-3-Inch-Widescreen-Bluetooth-Navigator/dp/B000MWNJPE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258493194&sr=1-1

I would still get a Mio if I had to get a new one, but it might be tough at 60 bucks. This is 89, with text to speech.
http://www.amazon.com/Mio-c230-3-5-Inch-Portable-Navigator/dp/B000VZ3ADS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258493387&sr=1-2

Get one with text to voice. I hear the 2009 map update is 80 bucks! Mine still works fine, rarely do I not find a location.

Or get a Garmin.
