Is this a good deal on a home subwoofer?

Thats a really good deal on that sub. Although its not a powerhouse I found Athena's subs to be pretty musical and provide a decent amount of punch for a small room.

You would want to loot at the amplifier for notable signs of damage, any burns.

Also check that the driver moves back and forth freely without any grinding. That will check for motor damage.

Make sure it powers on and check it with an output source.

you didnt really state a price range, but IMO the best deal for sub is about anything from SVS or diy.... :)

maybe take that $50 and put it twards a diy project and have a real a$$ kicker when your done...

It's a great deal for a subwoofer. THAT subwoofer however, is quite the tubby fart whore.

These options are both double the price or more than the OP's original question.

Maybe we should find out what his actual budget is as there are a lot of half way decent subs at that price point. :)

Honestly, I was just looking for something cheap on Craigslist... it's hard to put a price range on it. I'm no audiophile... but I do like good sounds and good music. Not being an audiophile, I think this board was not the best place to post about this... sorry about that. I just wanted to add some bass to my setup. I wanted something that was cheap and would last a long time. I guess 100 bucks would be my limit... but I prefer to spend less.

Sheep, I read some other posts where you actually recommended the Athena sub to some posters, and their price range was well above mine. Why the change of heart?

I never said NOT to buy it. I just said it's not that good.

AND, it's been a long *** time since I mentioned that subwoofer. Read my review.

Look for used Dayton Sub-120 HT

$50 is a pretty low budget. I would look for a used Dayton Sub-120 HT series 12" 150 watt powered subwoofer. Look on Craig's list in you area or other places that sell used audio equipment, such Audiogon

A new one is $155 which I realize is three time OP's budget. However, this is as low price, inexpensive sub that sounds good that I personally would recommend. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C9NV78

Good Luck!

Yes I would agree thats a killer sub for a small/medium sized room. I have a few friends that have one and they are excellent. But good luck finding one for $50. :)

If you can bump it up to $150 by saving up you are looking at a stellar sub. But if you can't afford it the Athena is really not bad.

Depending on how far you can stretch your budget you could open it up for a few more options.
