Ok guys, just to give you an update: Future Shop delivered the Velo DLS-5000R to my door tonight at about 9pm. I have only one thing to say---WOW!
A little background---I live in a condo, but we are moving to a house in about a month, and the audio system will be in the basement. However, for now it is in a room 12 ft x 12 ft. This sub is waaay too powerful for this small room, but nevertheless--it sounds great! I downloaded some subwoofer test songs, like "Bass, I love you" and other ones.. It's amazing! On more techno-like songs, the bass seems really tight, it hits me in the chest, though I need to turn the volume up to physically feel the tight wave coming at me with each beat.
I am totally impressed, I can say it is totally an upgrade from the Infinity TSS-1200. Not that it was weak or anything, but this Velo monster really dominates! The remote control is great---I was sitting on the floor, muting/unmuting, changing the modes, etc....it's awesome, I can't believe how all makers don't have remotes for their subs, it's so useful!
One thing I don't like---the volume control of the sub, in order to know how much it is, you need to count the blinks, but it's not a problem once you settle to a volume you like.
I have the crossover at the receiver set to 100Hz, Fronts are set to SMALL. The crossover on the sub I set to "bypass", that is---disabled, let's everything up to 200hz in. I experimented with 80Hz, but I seem to like the sub to handle more of the bass, not that the bookshelves don't cover the 80-100hz pretty well.
Question: since I'm letting only stuff down to 100hz to the bookshelves, then the receiver's amp should have a bit more power for the bookshelves for frequencies more than 100hz, right?
