Velodyne DLS-5000R vs Infinity TSS-1200

For the last two weeks I've been building my first audio system, which will live in my basement (once we move to the new house), which is about 23 x 13 with an open space of about 12 x 12.

I'm going to use the system only for music, so no need for surround, I'm sticking to a 2.1 system. I've got two, what seems to be good, bookshelves: Polk Audio RTiA3, and a Pioneer VSX-819H-K receiver.

Initially, I got this Infinity TSS-1200, 12 inch sub from the local store, but just the sub as it was a display model and got it for cheap. It sounded great. However, the other day I was looking at Velodyne DLS-5000R, 15 inch 600 W RMS / 1000W peak, which had the price of $999 before tax in the Futureshop. I started talking to the rep, and one thing led to another, so believe it or not, the guy gave me a 50% discount, and, needless to say, I bought it! I'm having it delivered tomorrow, and I am really anxious---I'm greedy for bass, so do you think it will sound better than the Infinity TSS-1200, which is only about 250 W RMS?

Anybody owned / listened to Velodyne DLS-5000R, and would be kind to share opinions?

Where exactly do you live? Both are above average (esp the Velodyne) when compared to other products at BB and FS, but neither are good for the money. If you're in Canada (I assume you are due to the mention of Future Shop) look into HSU, or SVS. Both have Canadian distributors, and both offer better products for the money.

I have heard Speakerman39 (Phil) say that the SVS PB10 was a very fine sub. Normally I wouldn't pass someone else's impressions off but he has owned quite a few and his recommendation of this one really made an impression on me.

Now I want two. :)

I have owned this sub for about 4 years and love it. Would without hesitation buy one again if I had the need. The remote gives you the option of 4 different modes, phase switching (adjust according to your placement in the room) and volume all from your seat. When listening to music I switch to the jazz mode as my choice because of the incredibly tight flawless bass it creates. You will not be dissappointed. I have moved to three different houses with this sub so I have had it in a variety of different room sizes and shapes and it has never dissappointed. I have never had to push volume beyond 3/4 especially with the newer bass management that the systems of the last couple of years have. I now run my sub at not much more that an idle, so that means loger life. Sorry I ment DLS 5000R not DLS 500R I missed a 0.

Ok guys, just to give you an update: Future Shop delivered the Velo DLS-5000R to my door tonight at about 9pm. I have only one thing to say---WOW!

A little background---I live in a condo, but we are moving to a house in about a month, and the audio system will be in the basement. However, for now it is in a room 12 ft x 12 ft. This sub is waaay too powerful for this small room, but nevertheless--it sounds great! I downloaded some subwoofer test songs, like "Bass, I love you" and other ones.. It's amazing! On more techno-like songs, the bass seems really tight, it hits me in the chest, though I need to turn the volume up to physically feel the tight wave coming at me with each beat.

I am totally impressed, I can say it is totally an upgrade from the Infinity TSS-1200. Not that it was weak or anything, but this Velo monster really dominates! The remote control is great---I was sitting on the floor, muting/unmuting, changing the modes, etc....it's awesome, I can't believe how all makers don't have remotes for their subs, it's so useful!

One thing I don't like---the volume control of the sub, in order to know how much it is, you need to count the blinks, but it's not a problem once you settle to a volume you like.

I have the crossover at the receiver set to 100Hz, Fronts are set to SMALL. The crossover on the sub I set to "bypass", that is---disabled, let's everything up to 200hz in. I experimented with 80Hz, but I seem to like the sub to handle more of the bass, not that the bookshelves don't cover the 80-100hz pretty well.

Question: since I'm letting only stuff down to 100hz to the bookshelves, then the receiver's amp should have a bit more power for the bookshelves for frequencies more than 100hz, right?

To answer your question, yes.

To see what you're hearing (give or take a few units), look here.

To see what you COULD be hearing (give or take a few units) look here.

You should re-title this thread, and change your OP a bit.. maybe something like this.

I'm hear to waste your time!

Hi, I have a bunch of questions for you. They are going to be fairly basic questions anyone can figure out with a little research, but I can't be bothered to lift a finger. Once you're done spoon feeding me the correct answer, I'm going to ignore it! Then I'll tell you about how awesome and amazing my choice is, in a completely useless, biased way.

Ok Mr. Sheep,

You really seem to know the audio stuff, but other than that (I'm gonna level with you here), you're being childish with your attempt to offend me. For your information, I did "lift my finger" quite a lot, and this is after all a "Subwoofers" section of the forum---where else to post this then here.

On the contrary, you should have "lifted your finger" when making your expert suggestions, because apparently you didn't care enough to read my message in the first place. Had you done that, you'd have noticed I paid 500 dollars (+13% tax = $565) for the Velodyne DLS-5000R. What you are comparing it with is a SVS PB12-NSD, which here in Canada costs exactly $729 (+13% tax = $823 + $48 shipping = $871): http://www.sonicboomaudio.com/box-subwoofers-c-1.html

The $300 price difference is about 53% increase from what I paid for the Volodyne, which was already beyond my budget for this system (remember, I moved from TSS1200, which was open box btw, 159 dollars total!)....well, thanks for you advice, but not particularly useful when it carries this price tag...

My suggestion to you---read people's posts more carefully and try really hard to be nice. Then your expert opinion won't be wasted and will count a lot, and your advice will be appreciated, which is definitely not the case here.

Oh yeah, and by the way, if you read the http://www.avtalk.co.uk/showthread.php?t=12089 which Sheep suggested, then you must read the comments that follow the review. The guy doing the test didn't use the "Movies" preset, which extends the low-distortion 110db to 20hz, instead of the 30 hz shown in the test... anyway..talk about lifting fingers here..

You forgot to add the price of your Infinity sub to the price of the Velodyne. You did buy two, remember.

BTW, I only chose the PB-12 because it was the cheapest SVS measured by AVtalk (wanted to keep things equal). But you could have bought this too.

http://www.sonicboomaudio.com/pb10nsd-powered-box-subwoofer-10-nsd-series-woofer-black-p-5.html

And here is some measurements for you.

http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/subwoofer-tests-archived/994-svs-pb10-isd-2nd-unit.html

Note the PB-10ISD and NSD perform exactly the same, the NSD is just using a driver built by SVS, rather then TC Sounds.

Everyone can point a finger. Bottom line, I'm just saying what everyone was thinking.

I know exactly what the presets do. I have a Velodyne with those features in my stereo. I also know that every review I've read for those subwoofers with these presets, stated they preferred them off.

Thanks Sheep. Reading more, I see that you really know your stuff and you do have a strong point about the SVS subs, even the small 10 inch one. I appreciate your advice, however, call it stigma, prejudice or what not, but I kind of feel like sticking to the 15 inch woofer, kind of feels better when I look at the big in physical size monster, even if of inferiour quality to the SVS 10 and 12 inch. Thanks a lot though, I really learned a lot out of this. I still like the sound of the Velo though, so if I never listen to SVS, I'll be fine ;)

For the record, I've never heard one either. I'm just a jackass.

Corsara,
Congrats on the 5000R purchase, especially for the price you paid!

I too own a 5000R and still consider it one of the most 'musical' subs I have owned.

Most of the movie sound effects can also be played very loud (110DB) with the 5000, when paired with my Infinity P362's.

That said, I would not bet against SVS as they usually have huge enclosures and massive magnets in their drivers for their respective classes.

Just as a perspective, user 'mike c' on this board compared his twin 5000R's AND a DD-18 with 'one' PB-13 and considered the PB 13 superior.

For now, my 5000R will suffice while I save up some money for the PB13's :)

Hoping you are enjoying yours as well!

Yep, I've never heard an SVS, and I'm good that way since I really enjoy the 5000R. I'm yet to really crank it up above 60 (on 1-100 volume receiver), it's just too loud :) And since I listen to a lot of Rock (but not only), I don't really need the low end extension of the SVS either, I guess..hmm
