I'm having a bit of a difficult time comparing acoustical performance , can someone help me understand what it is I'm looking at?

How does UltraTouch compare to OC 703 for use as bass trap?

Because of kids in the house I would rather go with something less irratating, like UltraTouch if I can.

Looks like UltraTouch is comparable OC703/705 for the same acoustical value at low frequencies per thickness.

Fiberglass and rockwool products do not present any irritation if you build the units outside of the house and use the proper filter material to cover them. One of the best materials (that will not degrade high frequency performance like some materials) is to use the very cheap carpet padding foam, the stuff that is 1/2", and use the open cell side open to the outside, then cover this with an acoustical transparent cloth. There is no way for any fibers to ever escape.

Rockwool is considered safe and recent lab tests have shown it contains no carcinogens. I would suggest as Wmax that you line it with acoustically transparent cloth. You can request the safety data sheet from your insulation store for more information.

Carpet padding - I hadn't thought of it before.

Now I'm assuming that when you say " open cell side " you are talking about the side that goes against the carpet ?

I must admit to having seen padding that was non-directional ( in that it didn't matter what side was up or down ), I'm guessing that this might not be as useful for our purpose as the other stuff

The only mineral wool / rock wool that I have found so far in town is in my attic and the only fiberglass the local stores carry is the pink stuff - I can get some OC 705, about a 70 min drive, while I did find a UltraTouch supplier about 45 min away.

I can't believe I have been so forgetful of late I was going to ask, about something I heard -

I heard that a thin non-porous membrane can be effective with dealing with lower frequencies - Is this true?

If so, what about using UltraTouch radiant barrier - if I am understanding everything correctly , then on a per/inch basis it might actually be better than the thicker stuff - I'm not saying that many layers should be used, only that the rear of the panel ( after the air gap ), be covered in a single layer for more effectiveness ( if a membrane is effective ).

Should I end up going with the UltraTouch, would there be any acoustical benefit to compressing the material - say using the 5.5" material compressed to 4"?
