To be completely honest, I'm a little worried about what future displays might be like. If we continue down the path we're on right now, the goals seem to be all about lower power consumption, lighter physical weight and lower prices. I'm not against any of those things, per se. But they really aren't conducive to aiming for the absolute best picture quality.
SED is still a potentially viable technology and capable of producing the best image quality. But it would also be expensive, use considerable amounts of electricity and not be as physically thin and light weight.
OLED would appear to be our best hope, but I am not entirely convinced about OLED's suitability for large screen sizes.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the discontinued Kuro plasmas will remain the pinnacle of consumer display quality for many, many years to come.
