To be completely honest, I'm a little worried about what future displays might be like. If we continue down the path we're on right now, the goals seem to be all about lower power consumption, lighter physical weight and lower prices. I'm not against any of those things, per se. But they really aren't conducive to aiming for the absolute best picture quality.

SED is still a potentially viable technology and capable of producing the best image quality. But it would also be expensive, use considerable amounts of electricity and not be as physically thin and light weight.

OLED would appear to be our best hope, but I am not entirely convinced about OLED's suitability for large screen sizes.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the discontinued Kuro plasmas will remain the pinnacle of consumer display quality for many, many years to come.

The key benefits of a plasma tv I like, is the Brightness of Plasma Screens, and the greatest amount of compatibility across multiple video formats.

RIP Kuro

How can it be that the best plasma display is no longer going to be manufactured?

Does anyone else smell corporate greed?

The CEO's of large corporations have to make hundreds of millions per anum - leaving the consumer with ridiculous prices that can not be supported.

I am simply amazed that LCD has taken off like a shot while plasma sales have lagged. Plasma beats out LCD in picture quality by a mile and has none of the "ghosting effects" that LCD is notorious for.

But then again, Beta had a far superior picture and smaller cassettes yet VCR trounced that also.

I love my Samsung plasma and have a buddy who has the Kuro and agree Kuro is the king of displays and it will take a few generations before any company can make something to match the Kuro.

I have an LED DLP (67") and the picture is amazing, and of course it has no ghosting or burn in issues whatsoever. What I find amazing is that flat is so very important to many people. For around $2000 you can't find a better deal for a big screen.

Seriously, I have no life.
Burn-in doesn't happen any faster than a regular TV did and that took a long time. Also, sending a video signal to a plasma display that's extremely bright or if the plasma has a white balance function, removes any remnants of burn in. People who make more on LCD TVs use the burn-in myth to sell off of Plasma. For fast action, plasma is a better picture but it's all in the eye of the beholder, so it's not really accurate to tell someone that they're wrong.

Congrats. The G10's are a great set and I have been eyeballing one to replace my TH-50PZ750. The new panasonics have a very similar panel in them to the Pioneer panels that are no longer made.

I was told flat out by a Panasonic rep that when Pioneer closed their plasma division, Panasonic went and hired most all of their designers. Pioneer had already licensed their panel tech to Panasonic and had Panasonic manufacturing the panels for them for a few months before Pioneer decided to exit the television business. The Panasonic S1, G10 and V10 plasmas use this tech in the panels. The only difference is that Pioneer did not license the tech to Panny for their internal scaler/de-interlacer, which is what would keep the Pioneer panels ahead of Panasonics in picture quality. But now Panny has the Pioneer techs working for them and designing (or re-designing) these parts. He said to expect the next line of Panny plasma's to be thinner and rival the picture quality shown by the super black Pioneer Plasma that was shown at CES a year or two ago that was never released.

very interesting. I've been eyeing a plasma for years--I remember when a 42" was around $4000. Glad I waited. I have 4 LCD's. Avoided plasma because my son would be playing PS3/Xbox on the 2 biggest. Now I'm having a new cabinet built and will get either a 42" or 46" plasma--no games--in the next 2 weeks. Glad to see plasma still seems to be the best pic. I'm definitely getting a Panasonic; now I'm wondering if I'm gonna regret not waiting a little longer for the next gen given what was posted above about the Pioneer technology coming to Panny.
