yep. so if i didnt go with a dual coil would i go right pos and left neg? or just pick one side and ignore the other?

thanks!
I should have asked for a shot of the other side of that plate. Does it have the crossover on the back?

I know you want to keep the cost down but have you looked online for subwoofer amplifier modules? Some of them are pretty reasonable and would eliminate the problem of how it needs to be connected to the amp and it would also give you the extra power you might want for the bass. Since you already said you can do some woodworking, all you'd need to do is enlarge the hole used to mount the existing input plate and since the subwoofer amp only has one set of wires, you would have much more flexibility in which woofer you choose. Many of the sub amp modules has speaker and low level inputs and if you buy one with both, you'll be in a better position to upgrade other parts of the system in the future, assuming the sub still does the job.

I'd actually wire one set to the other. In case you forget when moving or something like that.
so combine those two positives and 2 neg. and send both left and right signals to the single woofer? am i reading that right?

here it is, is that a good enough pic? as far as getting an amp for this, no i really haven't thought about it, i actually had this box in the garbage along with the woofer but i thought if i can get a cheap woofer it would be worth keeping. i know this doesn't make much sense on a board like this but i swear my HT system will have quality stuff when it is done. this is so i can just hear a lil base in the garage when i am doing some woodworking.

Well, those are the strangest values I have seen for a passive crossover.

The 125uF after the coil calculates to about 325Hz @ 4 Ohms or 160Hz @ 8 Ohms (if the coil is close to 8mH) and I would love to see a circuit diagram 'cause I have no idea what they were doing with 1000uF caps in there. The only thing I can think of is that the coils are multi-tapped and are being used for both the high pass and low pass.

help newbie here

I just bought a CerwinVega sw 12b. on ebay. I bought it cause I used to have a powered CV that rocked (it looks just like it--end table, bottom firing). I didn't realize this was a passive SW (my bad). I bought it to replace the (POS) MTX SW2 8" sub that sounds too boomy with my 400W Denon setup. Can I use the amp in the MTX to power the CV? (remove the MTX amp and install in CV) Can I use the Denon (AVR 3200) to power the sub? (it's only got a "pre-out" rca jack to hook to sub) Can I take the signal off one of the main speakers?

I'm all questions ain't I? I know the sound I want and the MTX just doesn't give it. The CV I had years ago sounded so great because even at low volume, the bass was present.

thanks for any and all suggestions.

I suggest, you go for any Logitech Sub woofers, they are pretty decent and cheap.

You would want to find out what the MTX sub amp wants to have as a load. If it's made for 8 Ohms, you don't want to connect the C-V voice coils in parallel if they're 4 Ohms each. If they're 4 Ohms each and the MTX wants to see 8 Ohms, wire them in series and try it. I doubt the amp has any equalization built in. The MTX amp would need to be connected directly to the C-V woofer, bypassing the passive crossover.

Hey- if people didn't experiment with this stuff, we would have only a fraction of the new products that are available to us.

use parts express #299 108

I just rebuilt one of these.... The 2 large caps are subsonic hi pass caps that cause a 35 hz and below rolloff with my NOS cerwin vega xl 12d woofer.. these can be bypassed unless you are using more than 100 wpc... parts express has a dual coil woofer for $30 dollars part #299 108 .. otherwise the emerson dual coil woofer should work.. 8 ohm coils will work better w/exsisting crossover better than 4 ohms...
These units are more boombox than high end, and will work best with minispeakers in the garage... lots of output at 100 hz...... Might also work well as a sub for the typically undersized center channel speaker..
