I'm guessing that for a lot of folks on at the moment, it's still September 10. There will undoubtedly more discussion on this tomorrow (or, for some of you, later today).

I was at home that day. The attacks began around 6am my time, and I stayed home from work. I (like a lot of people, I'm sure) wasn't sure what was going to happen next, and I figured that my house was safer than a lot of more public areas.

EDIT: Matt beat me to the whole different-time-zones thing. :)

i was in 6th grade english class. they told us 2 planes flew into the world trade centers, but never bothered to tell us they collapsed. I didn't find out they collapsed or that they hit the pentagon until I got home and saw it on the news.

I was in class, in college, I think chemistry. It was a 2.5 hour class and they usually gave us a short break in the middle and I remember walking out and on the floor below us through the atrium you could see people standing jampacked watching the TVs in the food court but couldn't see what was going on. Someone asked me what everyone was watching and I said I didn't know but guessed it was a terrorist attack but didn't know where it took place. Didn't find out until after class what happened.

I was dropping my kids off at daycare and heard on the radio that a plane had hit the first tower. At that time, the theory was that it was just a small plane. When I got in my car, I tuned to the local ABC affiliate radio station and they were watching the ordeal on TV and reporting what they saw. They were speculating what size the plane would have to be to do that kind of damage when the second plane hit. Immediately the DJ exclaimed “That’s it – we’re under attack”. Traffic slowed down, but kept moving, it was obvious that people were getting the news all around – it was a very surreal scene. Then the plane hit the Pentagon – I just kept saying out loud “What the hell is going on”. As I turned the curve to head south into Minneapolis, I could see planes in the distance in their approach patterns, but because of what I was hearing, I was wondering if they were headed right for the building I worked in.

When I did get to work it was chaotic. Two people had relatives that worked in the NY area and were frantically trying to call them while one woman wanted t leave (we worked in the tallest building in the city). Someone brought a TV into one of the conference rooms and a group gathered in there to view what was going on. Shortly after the first building collapsed the reporter on the news announced several buildings around the country were being evacuated, including the Capitol, the Sears Tower in Chicago, the IDS building in Minneapolis…wait, that’s THIS building! We sat around looking at each other wondering what to do, and a minute later the announcement came over the PA system to evacuate.

I remember that evening visiting with neighbors outside as we all realized that the world had become a very different place. then over the next week how quiet tghe sky was without planes in the air.

I live a couple miles from a Nuclear power plant...there were plenty of planes and helicopters in the air...all military. No other air craft though which was different since I am also in the flight path to land (or take off if the winds change) at a local municipal airport. Things defiantly changed.

It is my birthday and a day that we will never forget. I was at the hospital when it all occured and I cried for weeks afterwards.

"Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)"

Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day
Out in the yard with your wife and children
Working on some stage in LA
Did you stand there in shock at the site of
That black smoke rising against that blue sky
Did you shout out in anger
In fear for your neighbor
Or did you just sit down and cry

Did you weep for the children
Who lost their dear loved ones
And pray for the ones who don't know
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below

Did you burst out in pride
For the red white and blue
The heroes who died just doing what they do
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself to what really matters

I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith hope and love are some good things he gave us
And the greatest is love

Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day
Teaching a class full of innocent children
Driving down some cold interstate
Did you feel guilty cause you're a survivor
In a crowded room did you feel alone
Did you call up your mother and tell her you love her
Did you dust off that bible at home
Did you open your eyes and hope it never happened
Close your eyes and not go to sleep
Did you notice the sunset the first time in ages
Speak with some stranger on the street
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow
Go out and buy you a gun
Did you turn off that violent old movie you're watching
And turn on "I Love Lucy" reruns
Did you go to a church and hold hands with some stranger
Stand in line and give your own blood
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family
Thank God you had somebody to love

I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith hope and love are some good things he gave us
And the greatest is love

I was home with a back injury and when the new's broke I was shocked at how this could happen. I called the wife at work to tell her and as I was explaining it to her I watched the second plane hit the tower. I was stunned and for a second or two thought to myself that this isn't real, this can't be happening. I couldn't even talk and my wife was asking me what was going on. I don't even like thinking about those images I saw that day. I hung up the phone and just stared at the new's for hours wondering how this could happen. That day will be etched in my memory until the day I die....:(

I was on my honeymoon. We were actually supposed to fly from Kauai to Maui that day. We woke up and there was a note that had been slipped under the door that said that the airport was closed. We turned on the TV and couldn't believe what we saw.

I remember watching the second plane hit the tower and thinking, "That looks so fake." We're used to seeing how explosions like that happen in the movies.

We went to a secluded beach a day or two later and a rasta looking guy who had been camping out there came up to me and asked me what was going on. I guess the only contact he had with the outside world was a radio.

So we ended up staying on Kauai for another week, until they re-opened the airport. But if you have to be stranded somewhere, Kauai is the place to do it.

I was in high school band watching a special on Jazz. My principal came on the intercom and said a plane had hit the World Trade Center. We changed over to a news station and saw the second plane hit. In my next class I watched as the towers fell...no one around me could tell what happened and the news reporter thought the tower was simply obscured by smoke. My last class of the day my teacher actually tried to get us to do calculus...I could barely even do addition at this point.

No, I will never forget this day...and I'll make sure the people who wish to do the same thing to us again will never forget either.

I was in a class at UCC in Elizabeth, NJ in the basement of a seven floor building. I heard about the strikes vis the grapevinnr and internet. By the time I was able to free myself up and get to an eastward facing window on the sixth floor, I was able to see the second tower tremble and slowly collapse straight down into the smoke.

That's a sight I'll never forget.

I was home and my mother told me that a plane had crashed into the world trade center. I turned on the TV and was stunned. Then I saw the 2nd plane hit and I lost it. Then the first building collapsed and I collapsed in tears. It was a very sad day. I think I cried more that day than ever before. Everything changed and the economy no longer was as important.

I was on the way to work when the first plane hit. I got to work a few minutes later and everyone was in a panic. I asked what was going on but got many different stories. A few minutes later the news came that a second plain hit the towers. At that time, many false rumors were flying around. Some said that the towers in Chicago were hit. Others said that a 747 was shot down heading into Canada. It sounded like the whole country was under attack.
My wife was still in the Philippines at the time. It took her about an hour to get a free phone line and reach me at work.
We were sent home around 10:30 AM. On my way home, I passed through a few local school districts. Each school I went past, had many parents franticly trying to find their kids and get them home safely. Many of the cars on the roads were going at a high rate of speed as everyone was rushing to get to their families.
Each year I get a call from the Saleslady who had stopped in to see me that morning.
For weeks, I was glued to the news all day and all night. The emotion was overwhelming and I couldn't pull myself away.
