I'll never forget that day. It was the most perfect day, with the bluest sky I can remember.
I was playing hooky from my real job, and doing a side job in a multi-million dollar house on the New Jersey shore.
One of the painters had a radio, and yelled down from upstairs that a plane had hit the Trade Center.
My first though was, it must've been a small private plane; so I went back to working. He later yelled out, that another plane hit the other tower, and they were airliners!
All of the other workers left; my co-worker and I had to finish that day, due to our pending 'real jobs.' So we stayed and worked the rest of the day, with no further news updates.
I'd left my cell phone in my truck, since it interfered with my tool belt, and falls out of it's belt clip.
Unbeknownst to me, my wife was franticly calling from her job. ( I realized later, I was in a state of denial with my thinking that there was nothing we could, so we should just keep working.)
Her cousin had a meeting in the Trade Center that morning. We found out later that she was running late due to traffic, and heard about the 1st tower on the car radio; she was just before the bridge into the city.
That day I remember thinking, this will be the end of Political Correctness; and that it was too bad it had to take a such a horrific act to end it. Unfortunately I was wrong. The undermining divisive nature of Political Correctness is stronger than ever.
