Please define "audiophile quality".

Does that mean a fancy name, styling and price, lots of exposition on what parts it contains, and tons of unquantifiable superlatives as to it's sound?

Or simply good build quality and good sound?

Im sure there are probobly more expensive universal players out there but you can take a look at Denon's DVD-A1UDCI. They have it at MSRP $4,500

  • Exclusive Denon technology provides universal playback of popular audio and video disc formats, including Blu-ray, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD and music CD
  • Dynamic Discrete Surround Circuit-HD technology
  • Advanced AL32 processing and 32-bit D/A conversion
  • Silicon Optix Realta HQV video processor
  • HDMI Clock Control via Denon Link 4
  • Dual parallel HDMI outputs
  • Balanced stereo analog outputs; multi-channel analog outputs
Also dont forget to pick up a Denon AK-DL1 Ultra Premium Denon Link Cable for a MSRP $499. :D

If you're looking for something reasonably priced, check out Oppo.

Where is the need for a "high end" player coming from? The salesperson or your personal experience with better players?

Be carefull when you buy highend players. I bought the Camelot Round Table 4K Retail (paid way less of course) about ten years ago, little did I know at the time but is was a rebadged Panasonic with a retail of $400.--. There is a lot of rebadging going on. You might end up paying as much as 10X more just for a differend look, with no difference in SQ.

High end player

let me try and narrow this down. Looking for a well built great sounding universal player, that will quite posibly be my last upgrade. currently using a Marantz DV 12S2 that has served me well.

Oppo, if Lexicon thinks Oppo's Blu-ray/DVD/DVD-Audio/SACD player is good enough to copy and sell for $4500, then it's gotta be the shizz.:D

In a market with technology at it's present height, a near end all front end is not only possible, but real.

Take a look at this:

http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/transports/high-definition-dvd-players-hd-dvd-blu-ray/lexicon-bd-30-universal-blu-ray-player

Then save some money and buy the Oppo BDP-83:

http://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-83/

Unless, of course, what you want is to spend a few thousand dollars on a fancy box to show off to stupid "audiophile" friends who are suckered into believing that a fancy box means that it sounds better.

Even the front has the same basic control layout, they weren't trying hard enough to make it look different. Of course the crowd that Lexicon appeals to is completely blind of Oppo anyway, so they will really think they are getting the best (and it may well be the best, just at a really high markup).

It sounds a little like what Saleen Autosport does with the Mustang.:)
