Oppo wasn't on the prestigious list of exorbitantly expensive disc spinners. I'm merely pointing out the fact that it's a cruel joke to think that these spinners merit such high price tags.

I got a Lexicon RT-20 from my local dealer on a clearance deal. It is built like a tank and has an awesome analog out. It is based off a Marantz design. I would not have paid retail or even close to it; these things were expensive!

I use a Sony 550 for blu ray and the Lexicon for my DVD and Music listening. If I were in the market for a new machine that was a true universal; OPPO would be my first choice due to features and price.

Looking for any imput on which brand of universal player ( CD / DVD ) would be classed audiophile quality, Esoteric, bel canto, linn ?? Totally confused by all the salesman guff, anybody out there with some info ???

One thing that folks often forget is, that "audiophile quality" source is of no consequence if the digital outs are used... might as well use the digital outs on a WalMart player and save the cash.

Unless I am mistaken, there is a Digital-to-digital conversion that occurs. Is all software written with equal skill there?

I'd suspect that the quality of the encoder (and possibly upscaler) are even more significant with video.

The comment was intended mostly for the audio side of a source. The thought process is, the source sends out the bitstream and the actual DAC is done external to the player, thereby bypassing the multi thousand dollor DACs which are built into the player...

On the video side, it is all important since it is not as simple as audio and displays do very little processing other than things like re-scaling for format, etc. On the video side, it is best to send signal at native resolution.
