Weird issues with Dayton Sub 100

About three days ago I started noticing that things just weren't sounding the same, something was missing. Well today I think I may have found the root of the problem.

When listening to music with low bass, all the bass seems to be coming from the speakers, not the subwoofer. I think i might be hearing some sound from the subwoofer, but it's very hard to tell.

I tested some movies to try and confirm what I was hearing. I tried LOTR Fellowship but I couldn't remember where the ring drop scene was exactly. It's not where Sauron gets his finger cut off is it? Then I tested SAW II on the opening scene. On this one I really think I can hear sound coming from the subwoofer, and I know I can feel air coming out the ports on the back.

Other Observations:

When I change the crossover on the receiver, the sound stays the same - the betas seem to handle the full range of sound regardless of the crossover.

Whenever I run the auto calibration and it tests the sub, the sub fills the room with LFE just like it should.

Check these

1. It's turning on
You may need to turn it on manually.

2. Speakers are set to small
For music make sure your speakers are set to small.
Auto calibration will set it to large with Beta 20s.
Also make sure your sub turning on and the sub level is set at 0db.

3. Placement is correct
You could be sitting in a null as well. So a crawl test might be smart.

This sub can make your chest feel it in a small room. So something is certainly wrong in your setup. I've had similar issues and discovered it wasn't on actually.

Sounds as if you have your speakers set to large, and the sub set to output the LFE channel only. You need to review your speaker set up and bass management.

Ok, it is on, and the speakers are set to small. Crossover is 80hz

It's been working fine now for quite some time and to my knowledge nothing has changed. Maybe this 10 year old cable I found it the attic has finally bit the dust or maybe the amp in my sub is gone.

Well I just ran YPAO and the sub no longer makes noise when checking wiring. Results say there is no sub.

BTW it is on, and the speakers are set to small.

I'm not convinced that the sub is gone.

Lets double check the cabling. and try to play a test tone through it.

check the switches on the back.

is the volume at half way up and is the crossover turned to the max.

Also is the sub switched to normal mode?

Did you plug it into the right spot on your receiver. There are 2 LFE's on most receivers. The analog in's and the pre-outs.

Make sure it's in the pre-out(i've done this one too)

You can use any RCA type cable. So steal a component cable from the tv or something.

Are you sure you have checked sub "yes" in the set up menu.

Try another cable. If that fails, connect the sub to a CD player or device like that and see if you get any sound out of it. If not then your sub needs attention. Check for wires that may have come off before you assume the amp is dead. Also check that the woofer still works with a battery. May be the sub woofer has a fried voice coil. Connect the battery across the speaker terminals and take a wire on and off. The woofer cone should move to and fro as you make and break the connection.

lsiberian, I forgot to turn the sub on before running YPAO that last time, I edited my post.

Well I just checked with LOTR the Fellowship again and it seems to be working for that. On the other hand, my music which is hooked up via ipod through the portable jack on my receiver, still gets no bass:( Maybe that's the problem?

I'm pretty sure you have made an error in your speaker set up. Somehow you have configured your set up to only send the LFE channel to your sub and not the bass from the other channels below 80 Hz. It could also be that you do not have enough output from your receiver LFE out when playing music.

Turn up the sub output on your receiver and turn down the volume on the sub. That will ensure that the auto on circuit keeps your sub on.

Does the sub on light go out when playing music?

Did you check the speaker settings after you ran YPAO? Mine likes to set my speaker to large after the YPAO is ran.

No the light doesn't turn off when playing music. What you said about only getting designated LFE and not sub 80hz frequencies makes sense and seems like something that could cause this.

Just messing around, I turned my crossover up and it did change the sound. So that seems to be working.

Turning the volume up really loud I "think" I can hear sound coming out of sub while playing music from my ipod, but I'm not sure.

Yes, YPAO always sets my speakers as large excluding my center.

Update: I don't think it's my ipod that's at fault. I plugged it directly into my logitech z2300 and the same song that I had been struggling to hear the base on before now shook the house.

So i'm back to either the receiver, or my sub.:(

I have a strong feeling this is a set up issue. I don't see how there is a hardware problem if it works on movies. I still think you have it set up to only output dedicated LFE material from the LFE output of your receiver.

To get the bass from your ipod you need to activate the low pass filter on your receiver so that it outputs all LF below the crossover frequency, not just what is recorded on the 0.1 channel of a DVD or BD.

I tend to agree with you. However, I see no way of activating the low pass filter on my receiver other than what I've already done. Anyways, I do think you are right so I'm going to mess with it tomorrow for awhile. Maybe something accidentally got changed. If I can't figure it out, I'll think I'll just do a factory reset.:)
