I was really moved by the monologue from The Matrix which Agent Smith gave (when he was trying to break Morphius). It felt like a hard punch in the gut and almost brought me to tears.
Agent Smith:
I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area, and you multiply, and multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet, you are a plague, and we are the cure.

Historically, there are several examples to show that every time a civilization has met the most basic of human needs (food, shelter and clothing) to a point where they are no longer a concern, the baser of human instincts take over and eventually lead to the fall of that civilization. If not, it get taken over by one more advanced (usually militarily) than it. What we are seeing today is simply the modern manifistation of the same trend. The diffenence is that the demarcation between one civilization and another is blurred and military strength is not the only way to dominate the world.
That said, we have to realize that not all is bad and or a lost cause. It is simply a reality that bears witness to the infinite diversity and capacity (for good and bad) in the human race. Like everything in the universe, at some point the human race will stabilize. We just dont know when or in what form.
