Hello All,

So I really want to buy this tv, but I have some concerns about Pioneer's Plasma's because I've heard they are not making them anymore. So one, is that true? My other concern are about hot spots and plasmas in general.

So do you all like Pioneer as a plasma company? Is there a better company you would recommend for this price-$4000 to 6k. I'm willing to pay more for a more reliable source.

Any and all comments would be great!!

thanks,

Bob

Since your looking at the non elite, Id give serious that to panasonic TCP65v10, around 4000 usd msrp. This is a sweet display. If you can still find an Elite 141, that would be my other consideration.

thanks for your reply. I actually looked at yours, the Elite and now I thinking that is the way to go. I gather you would agree since you own one. How long have you had yours and do you have any complaints?

Also, is there any truth that you know of about Pioneer stopping the plasma division?

thank you,

Yes, Pioneer is out of the TV biz all together. They are still producing some units for sale outside the U.S. but that is supposed to end next year. Their plasmas have been industry leaders for many years and are very reliable.

If the Panny 65" V10 does go for $4000, I may have a very nice Christmas.

The hard part will be finding one of the Elites. I have zero complaints and wouldn't consider not giving it the thumbs up. Having said that if u want bigger the panny is the bomb with fabulous reviews competing with the elite and besting in a couple of areas.

If you can get a steal on a non-Elite, and find a professional calibrator who has the ISFcc software to tweak it through the RS232 port you can get Elite like performance. Not a bad way to go at all IMO.

No Panny will beat a Kuro Elite..unless you are talking about the $10K 65" model, which might come close.

You can find experienced calibrators on the avs forums that do just that.

Buy and Elite and don't look back. They are excellent! You can still find them around. You should be able to pick up a 151 for $4-4.5k. No, they are not going to make them anymore, but I would not worry about repair. They don't break often to start with and I believe parts will be around for quite awhile. I bought one back in March and love it!:D

I found an Elite on Amazon for $4393k. It's the 60" Pro 141fd. Man, I think we may be pulling the trigger!! I'll let you know if I do and all the happiness when I get it hooked up as well.

More advice or comments are always welcome!!!

thanks

The V series panny is going to be better than the 6020. Again while I love my Elite the panny can stand up to it ;)

Unless I'm mistaken the 6020 is 1080p.
If it is, my bad. Even more the case the 'older' Kuro would certainly stand up to anything Panasonic or Samsung can throw at it even today..sure the margin would be slimmer but still there.

(I was likely thinking of the original Kuro 50..PDP5080..duh..)

I own 8 and 9 gen Elites one, 768 and one 1080. For th record I think the 1150 does better overall with my HD programing. With Bluray no question that the 141 is better. My point with the pannys comes from Michael Fermer and the hd guru.

I wouldnt take a non elite or 8gen Elite over the V series panny. I have alot of time vested in both displays with ISF and know there full range and thats what Im basing the recomendation on.

You may be right re: non-Elites, I have not seen any myself that have been calibrated with ControlCAl. But I've read a lot of very positive outcomes.
I was only offering an option.

Panasonic has improved significantly this time around (in gamma range also) but still has a slight deficiency in color accuracy. That 'difference' is not great mind you, I think the pannys have an excellent picture.

For now, personal taste would pick Samsung or Panasonic, with Kuro still on top. For those on the fence, the great track record of reliability of Panasonic could win them over.

You can see the results here including the calibration data from the shoot out at VE (in the comments section). The numbers don't lie. Panny for black level, Samsung for color accuracy, and Kuro for the best of both IMO.

I think the above results were very predictable, I thought what was most interesting were the results of the Toshiba LCD. (on the downside, the poor performance of the Sony, even for an LCD).

Hell, you can still get 50" of Kuro bliss for $2K in a KRP panel and only be missing a tuner. Probably the way I would go today (while they last).

I was at Best Buy last week and the sales rep told me they still had about 100 Pioneer 161's in their warehouse. They also said they were having a hard time selling them. He gave me a price of about $4000 bucks....not too bad coming from Best Buy!

Pro 161?

I think he gave you a hint when saying they can not get rid of them. BB WILL bargain, just don't expect them to price match unless it's an advertised price of a local competitor (not internet).
Just be cool and ask if they would accept anything lower to help reduce their inventory, and go from there. $4K is not a bad starting point for that puppy.
My point being, Best Buy will deal, but you have to press it. Many are put off by what they think are locked in prices. In today's economy I don't think there is such a thing.
