Why pay $1000? What's the value in speakers...

Are you comparing doing this to designing and building a speaker from scratch?
It's surprisingly similar actually.

Steak gets better with experience, meat, and cooking style.

It's a combination that's winning

Speakers get better with experience, drivers, and building style.

If that's how you want to take my analogy, feel free. But I think you're reading too much into it.

I have heard inexpensive speakers that sound very good (Insignias) and I have heard expensive speakers that sound like crap (Bose) and I have heard very high end speakers that sound jaw droppingly good but then whn I hear how much they cost, I think, yeah they sound good but not 65,000/pr good. It's all about what sounds good to you. I have installed systems costing 10,000 and the man is happy as a clam and the wife will come in and say she can't tell the difference between the old setup.

What I may like, (Paradigm, DefTech, Dynaudio and so on) you may hate. I have friends who swear Bose is best and I just cringe, but hey to each his own. I applaud the fact you want to build your own spekaers and I hope when done they sound like they cost thousands more and you can smile knowing your hard work and smart shopping and DIY skills paid off.

Seriously, I have no life.
Yes but with DIY you can make steaks like Ruth's Chris Steak house.

All one needs is a cast iron skillet. Extremely thick gloves and a fire extinguisher in case things go wrong.

It's simply a pan seared steak which is awesome.
What about the meat, itself? That makes a huge difference.

Here at The Road Kill Cafe, we use only the freshest.

Well how it's killed matter too. But a Black Angus Steer grazed makes one hell of a steak.

On the other hand, I'd argue that for your average driver the additional 100k for a good Mercedes nets you far less real world improvement in drive/ride experience over the Camary. Diminishing marginal improvement for $ spent.
You've obviously never driven a $100k Mercedes :) The Camry is a nice car but the driving experience between the two aren't even comparable, even for a casual driver. That being said, I'd probably still get the Camry b/c its higher reliability, cheaper maintenance and lower cost and use my savings to buy better speakers and go on a few vacations:)

Or, I'd spend a little more and get an Infiniti M35 which will get me much closer to Mercedes level performance, while still maintaining near Camry level reliability and maintenance. At that point, I'd probably take less vacations and just enjoy my ride :)

Actually, the newer G37 or M series is a nice ride - especially the “x” variant. Wow - from speakers to steak to cars - where else will this thread go?

Agreed, I am still stuck on calling them G35/M35 :) I wish those cars got better gas mileage. I chose an Acura TL Type S over a G37 for that very reason as the 7speed G37 wasn't out yet and the current G35 was a gas hog.
