Has anyone watched any of the old 007 movies in BR? The prices are good but I am not sure about the PQ of such old movies. Some of them are over 40 years old!

Hi Peng,

Yes, I own some of them and they are pretty good, better than the DVDs for sure, in particular "Dr. No", "From Russia with Love", "Goldfinger", and few others. Of course, Sean Connery is the true James Bond (agent 007) from these older titles. Roger Moore was never my type of 007.

So, the oldest titles have the best looks, because more care was put into them for best restoration.

For further informations, chech "High Def Digest" web site, they have all been reviewed there, and the reviews are accurate as for their video transfers and picture quality. Just don't expect too much as for their audio quality though, after all, like you said, they are over 40 years old. But still they are very intelligible and quite good for their age.

Thank you for the feedback. I bought the Gold finger (45 years old), Moonraker and Die another day from the Futureshop for 9.99 each but I wasn't going to open them until I have some feedback. I own the SD DVDs already so I definitely don't want to own the BRDs unless they really do offer true 1080p quality.

Peng if you're looking for amazing blue ray deals head to your nearest blockbuster. I picked up Taken, and Quantam of Solace for 15 bucks each. They have a 2 for 30 CDN deal on previously viewed blue rays. The previously viewed ones look brand new, the discs are in perfect condition.

It all depends on which store you go to, but I also got the Dark Knight, and Death Race for 15 bucks each too.

Thanks, I certainly am interested in the QOS.

$9.99 a piece for 007 on blu-ray, that's very good.

I did not know that you were a Canadian Peng. And Shock too!
You guys can be helpful on type of deals like these.
I should go out more often. I'm still missing few James Bond to add to my collection. At $9.99 a piece, I'm all for it. :)

Why don't you guys mentioned this on your location, so we know that you are Canadians too. And I can help other Canasdians too, because I know where the best deals are at any time, except for blu-ray discs right now. :(

Anyway, I just find out the lowest price so far in Canada for the Onkyo TX-SR805. At Electronics for less, only $899 cdn. (retails for $1,499.99 cdn.).
Here: http:www.electronicsforless.ca/audio-3/amplifiers-receivers-13/onkyo-tx-sr805-7-1-channel-home-theater-receiver-with-hdmi-switc-695.html

All right, you guys take care.

$15 seems like a decent price to me.

Hi Bob, there are almost 30 of them still available for 9.99 including 6 Bond movies. Most of them are quite old, as expected for such low prices. You can find them all by visiting futureshop.ca and use the price filters to search.

Thanks Peng for the tip.

I also want "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" on blu-ray, also at Future Shop for $14.99, one of my favorite flick.

As for James Bond, I don't want them all, only the good ones, about a dozen max. from the grand total.

You are probably not the most demanding videophile, but it's loaded with DNR. I have a friend who is a huge fan of westerns, and most particularly on my system, and I refused to watch it at my place. I asked to watch the first few minutes of this title on a DLP, and this may be the first time ever that I saw extremely obvious DNR of an outdoor scenic shot, during the opening. As soon as I saw that, I knew it was going to be bad news.

It's too bad, because it's a good movie. I do believe that DNR could be a good thing, used very sparingly. There are still obvious flaws in the master, and how much they removed with excessive DNR can only be guessed, but my guess in this case is that there is way too much removal of film detail, way too often.

YMMV.

Yeah but the Blu-Ray version has to be better than my Special Edition DVD, no?

I am the biggest fan of Sergio Leone, I'm a big follower of his and Quentin Tarantino also.

You think that they will remaster this blu-ray eventually?

This is quite sad to hear this. :(
