Slumdog Millionaire

Watched this one this weekend. I liked the way the story was told, good acting all around but it didn’t quite “do it for me”. I really can’t put my finger on it, but the characters didn’t grab me, nor did the story. For all of it’s critical acclaim, I only give it a 3 out of five stars.

I liked it but kinda feel the same. It's above average but not totally stellar. I was slightly inebriated on 1st viewing and had to watch again to make sure how I felt about it.
I recently watched "City of Men". Pretty good, Dude. It's along the same vein as "City of God". It's about living in the slums of Brazil, unsure of what city.
Another small movie I recommend is "Once Were Warriors". It is incredible. It's about the Maori People of New Zealand. You won't regret that one, Craig.

Being an Indian, I thought it was ok, novel, but not nearly good enough to deserve the all the western media frenzy... Sometimes I wonder what the Oscar comittee smokes when handing out awards...

Puff... puff... Man, that Indian chick is hot, the kid is cute, lets...hang on...puff pufffff.... couch... give it 5 Oscars... couch... :D

There are much better Indian movies, with much better acting, stories, music, whatever... that never get seen outside the circles who visit the Indian groceries store.

Haven't seen this one yet, but after all the recommendations I've added it to my NetFlix. Although now my expectations aren't as high...

Is the guy in it Anwar from "Skins"?

*edit* Wow, yeah it is, good for him!

My wife saw a few minutes of it, almost vomit, and then left the theater.

No way in hell I would ever see this movie!!!

And yeah, I think the Oscars people are a bunch of morons.

I can't even watch the Oscars anymore. It's too stupid.:D

My friend (born and raised in India) said almost exactly word for word what you said.

There is a slightly revolting scene/ situation at the begining of the movie. The portrayed condition is unfortunately true and used for shock value (apparantly to good effect) through the director taking some liberties.

I think the movie is worth renting for a "slow-movie-month-weekend", but no more.

Well I must admit that I agree in pretty much everything you guys said about this flick. It didn't do it for me neither.

The thing that I like the most was the music score, some great pumping bass with cool rhythms. That's about what I remember best.

Just watched this movie... I thought it was very good, but
I thought that ending dance sequence was retarded.

^ Somehow, I just hate those big black bars, they just destroy the country side view.

Really stole any thunder the story of the main characters had - “Our lives suck, but hey, we can still all get together and dance”

I actually don't think the toilet scene was for just shock value.

Danny Boyle has used toilet scenes before, the one I remember is Trainspotting. The main character (Renton) is attempting to kick heroin, and wants a final hit before the benzo he took kicks in. He plugs some opium (plugging is putting it up your butt to get more out of a pill) but when the heroin wears off on his way home he gets diaherra (common with people coming off junk, because it makes you constipated) and well...here is the youtube video... (it doesn't spoil the movie if you haven't seen it)....

.... but, basically he has a dream, but to get there he needs to swim through all this s**t.

In Slumdog he re-uses this metaphor. I just thought it was executed better in Trainspotting, in this it didn't really work the same way, in my opinion.

Yeah.
At the end I was moved by the brother laying the money in the bathtub and "sacrificing" himself for his brother and Latika, and that her and the main character were together, but I wasn't ready for a dance.

Huh? They are spoiler bars. Click on the black bar and it will expose the text behind it. It prevents the story from being spoiled to someone who hasn't seen the movie yet and is reading through the thread.
