If Letterman ever said that about my daughter...

That's just wrong. :D
Agreed I would much rather hang out with Palin than McCain. After all she can see russia from her house. :D
But why would she be offended. I mean A-Rod isn't the dirtbag down the street. I understand the Yankees hate though.

I find it a common trait of liberal celebrities to be bitter, nasty and rude without boundaries when it comes to insulting others while demanding nothing but respect for themselves or those who think like them. Ever watched The View?
So your confessing to watching The View:p I never had that View of you before. ;)

I remind everyone Comedy is meant for fun and should never be taken too seriously.

Is that what is meant by painting them all with the same brush?
Nice broad strokes please. Yes, use the arm like a pendulum.

I didn't know Letterman was on the correct side up until now.
At least there is hope. :D
You are not suggesting that conservative hollyweird actors spout the venom and hate that those on the left do are you? I don't think you want to go there.

Venom and hate are pretty strong words. I like to have fun with Dave without getting overly vested in supporting a position that I don't fully support but I guess I would go so far as to say that there are (probably) plenty of liberal celebrities that don't come off like Jenine Gerafalo. (sp). I'll also say that I'm not particularly impressed with calm and dignified support of what has happened in the last eight years. But you are right, I don't want to go there.

Nice to meet you. ;)

Seriously, I have no life.
It's one thing to crack on Sara Palin since she's a public figure but to use their children as the butt of jokes has always been frowned upon. That's dirty pool.
It may not be right but mommy dragged the children into the political arena at every chance she could; that is not a justification, just that the kids are in the public as well.

That is right, politicians children will be off limits as soon as they stop using them as pawns and trophy's during elections.

Now's your chance Adam...Take his card!
I never said that I watch The View. I was asking if others ever had. The only thing of The View that I've seen is the clips that make network news or articles in print about the stupid crap they spew.

Is that what is meant by painting them all with the same brush?

You will note that I said it is a common trait, not universal. Janine Garofalo, Rosie O'Donnel, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins are some of the worst but there are many more still in the closet, like Letterman, that share and support those views. They come out of the woodwork from time to time, get their venom published, then it's all forgotten in the hype over some new movie. Miss California didn't even say anything offensive and look how she was maligned by that hateful little troll.

There are many intelligent people replying in this thread, (while I certainly don't profess to be one of them) I wonder if we could put partisan politics aside for just a bit.

If we can understand the obvious bias involved in snake oil speaker wire; why not the obvious political bias?

Simply picture Letterman's remark being made about your 14 year old sister or daughter.

Exactly, and if he was in arms reach of me I would promptly knock him out. Cowards like him though would rarely say such things in person.

You're sneaky like that. I would like to point out that since Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon are really just one person that should be referred to as Thelma, all your major gripes are with women! :D

Yes, he's a total and complete douche bag (to put it nicely). But that was true before his latest comments about Palin.

His retraction was just as bad and completely meaningless:

He just keeps digging himself deeper into the hole. Lets hope some good comes of all this.

Good as in his firing or forced resignation.

Well, I guess we'll just have to wait until Monday night to get to the truth of the matter, when Jon Stewart of Comedy Central's The Daily Show or Stephen Colbert (The Colbert Report) provide us with some sort of in depth analysis.

I'm glad we have someone like them to make sense of all this confusion. Imagine!! A satirist making fun of someone. What's this world coming to?

It just looks like Letterman's engaged in a battle of wits with an unarmed governor.

Ah, there's the rub.

He didn't attack the governor. He attacked her 14 year-old daughter.

...big difference...

Seems like it's similar to when shock jock / satirist Don Imus said something about "Nappy Headed Hoes"
He was fired.

Well, I just watched the video that Dave (major) put up of his retraction. IMO, there were several times that the audience laughed when I don't believe he was joking. For now, with that being all that I've seen, I'll take him at his word that he wasn't making jokes about her fourteen-year-old daughter. Perhaps the person who wrote the joke was, but that doesn't mean that Dave knew that and meant it that way. I've heard that her eighteen-year-old daughter was not at the baseball game, but who knows if Dave knew that?

Sounded like a laugh track to me.
Palin should just shoot him in the face as if she were the vice president. :D

I think Letterman sucks anyway, there was a time when I would have considered watching his show but when I channel surf through his dialog it just seems like a bunch of low budget humor that, well, sucks.I was a Leno fan for late night, now I watch ESPN or news because all those guys are lousy at what they do,I miss the real tonite show.Conan has a persona that one must have an aquired taste for and I dont have it.All IMO of course.

Hi Adam, Letterman's rehearsed 'retraction' reminds of the same type of condescending non-apology that we PM'd about the other day.

Just for the record, there is a sign telling the audience when to applaud and when to laugh.

I rarely find him funny and almost never watch any part of his show. Conan did push me over there earlier this week, though, as I was bored.
After I read your post, it makes we wonder how much of this is about ratings.
Too bad it's at a 14 year old girl's expense.

For me, it not a question of "What did Letterman know, and when did he know it?"
It's a question of, when and how to apologize.

They tell the audience when to laugh?! Wow, that's cheesy. Really cheesy. On a sitcom, alright...but not for a show like that. Leno didn't have a laugh sign, did he? If his jokes sucked...people didn't laugh.

It doesn't get me too worked up one way or another. Like I said, I hardly ever watch his show. I can understand why some are upset, and I can understand why some don't care.

An incident that did bother me was when Michael Richards blew up and was yelling racial insults. Jokes like that, IMO, show an underlying mentality of hatred that goes beyond trying to get a cheap laugh. I really liked Kramer, and that kind of ruined the show for me.
