You sure can. There is a special rated wire like this one. I have some outdoor rock speakers that have been sitting just because I'm too lazy to do this. It is called direct burial wire. I have not found it in rolls less than 500ft. I'll split it with you.

Hi Bill, I use low voltage landscaping wire.
It works great, I've used 12AWG or 10 AWG

That's why I always run the wires under a lawn gnome.

I have not even taken them out of the box. Due to the design of my house I and where I want to put them I have to run almost 100ft/speaker and I am not ready to bury that much wire.

I got them for Christmas from my brother. They are a cheap brand and not anything that great. I'll check when I get home to see what they are.

I've used monoprice in the past and will very likely use them again! Heh... I didn't mind shelling out for my main speakers but in all likelihood the wire will cost me more than the freaking speakers lol.

In wall and in ground are not the same. I think a trip to your local Home Depot would be best. 16 gauge wire for 40 ft is cool for 8 ohm speakers according to one chart that gets posted frequently but not according to Gene Della Sala's chart. We are Audioholics after all. The other thing is that 8 ohm speakers aren't really 8 ohms so a nice beefy 12 gauge would be my choice in a wire meant to be buried. I think 10 gauge would be more trouble than it's worth.

I checked out the local home depot and they only stock 16g landscape cable... I'll try out some of the Electrical supply centres in my area to see if they have 14g or 12g.

BTW Alex thanks for pointing out that the two applactions are not the same and I'll give Rick an extra THANKS because its a cheaper alternative!

If you want it to be more flexible, in terms of changing the system, run a 1-1/4" conduit to a central location and smaller to the sides, to where you could potentially put speakers now as well as later. The gray plastic electrical conduit is really cheap, it glues together just like plumbing pipe and it protects the wires much better than, well, nothing at all. It makes adding wires a snap and you won't have to dig it up to add anything. Even in conduit, it's best to use direct burial cable.

Hi Bill, if you haven’t picked your Rock speakers yet, I can highly recommend two brands.
The overall nod would go to the Paradigms, due to being easier to drive, though the Niles ‘look’ more realistic.

One thing to be mindful of; since a rock speaker doesn’t have anything to rebound off of, as a wall mounted, or indoor speaker does.
IMHO It’s better to get the bigger driver, to make up for the lack of bass reinforcement.

Thanks Rick...those Niles looked interesting but not available in Canada and the only dealer I believe is in Florida. As for Paradigm, I didn't even know they made outdoor speakers and I'll check out my local dealer.
