I've been looking at the Panasonic 3000U but now I'm looking at some of the JVC like the RS1 and RS10 which the RS10 is out of my budget if I bought it brand new. Does anyone know where I can get a demo projector for a good price?

Thank you this is definitely a prime option. Do you have any other sugguestions on projectors for the 2K - 3500 range that would be better? This projector will be for a dedicated theater with comcast TV hooked up to it as well for big games.

I'm afraid better is too subjective for me to go there. Certainly the Panny 3000, Epson 6500, Sanyo Z3000 and Mitsubishi 6500 are all very good machines in that price range. The JVC at that price is a very good option and less so at MSLP IMHO.:)

If you can find one, I would look at the Pioneer Elite Pro-FPJ1, which is a rabaged JVC RS2. They were closing them out for $2500-3000. It is a lot of pj for that kind of money! It is getting hard to find them anymore, though. Make sure to buy it from an authorized Pioneer dealer to get your warranty, also.

The Epson 6500UB and Panny 3000 are near the leaders of the pack for home theater right now at that price.

JVC has killer projectors, but they tend to be closer to $5K and aren't as bright as the Epson/Panny which could be an issue if you intend to do some viewing with lights on at times.

The JVC models don't have the versatility of the others, but are a better overall projector when it comes to true movie watching. If I were doing a 100" or so dedicated theater, the JVC would be my first choice.

If I wanted a multi-purpose space (movies & sports/tv, possibly some lights on) with a 1.78:1 screen (16:9) I would go with the Epson 6500UB.

If I wanted a multi-purpose space with a 2.35:1 screen I would go with the Panasonic.

If you throw a dart, and use that method for picking out of those three brands - you will NOT be disappointed. All are excellent products with their own minor areas of superior performance, but none of them have serious inferior performance.

The RS10 is plenty bright for sports and throws a stunning image. Though close in performance, the RS10 still tops those mentioned especially in fade to black, shadow details. For 5k you will be buying the RS20, I certainly didn't spend 5k on mine. I would suggest going to AVS and speaking with Jason as he will certainly give you a deal well under 5k; I will even go as far and say under 4k. The Epson will be brighter, however I think the JVC will be way more than enough. Put it this way, I have the RS10 paired up with a 126" Carada screen using BW material, the Iris is set to mode 2 and it is still plenty bright.

Either should perform well, but if you have the extra coin, the RS10 will last you for a very long time. Not to mention, look how sexy that black/gold looks and that's just on the outside, wait until you see the stunning image it throws

Do you guys think 4K projectors will be affordable in about 2 years?

Is that too long for someone to wait? :D

No, I don't think so.

At this time there are nearly NO 4K projectors on the market. The major manufacturers aren't in the game and even at the pro level they are very difficult to come by. This means that we are likely a couple of years out of seeing 4K products come in at the prosumer level - which may be $30,000 or more, which means 5 years, or more, until you see $5,000 units.

If at all.

That last line is due to the big question mark as to whether or not 4K displays are even going to make sense at the consumer level since no sources above 1080p are currently available. For perfect pixel-for-pixel resolution 1080p is the magic resolution which is likely to be the new 30 year NTSC type standard. Considering that there is zero indication that Blu-ray will have any physical successor, it likely means that HD downloads will be the future, and they aren't even touching the quality of Blu-ray Disc at this time.

So, we are looking at perhaps ten years before we even have a viable format which can consistently deliver higher than 1080p resolution to consumers.

At that time, displays beyond 1080p may become the norm, but that's a long way beyond what you asked about.

On the professional side, they are doing 4K encodes of films and 4K distribution, but this is tens of thousands of dollars beyond the average consumer's wallet.

http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/mkt-digitalcinema/?XID=O:4KDigitalCinema_4k digital projector:Google

I think JVC may have a model that high in resolution, but I'm not sure if DLP even has 4K chips out yet. I know a lot of digital cinemas are 2K resolution, not 4K.

Honestly I know very little about digital cinema and the large auditoriums I have written specs for have all used 1080p projectors or 2K projectors.
