Computer question to the comp wiz

Seriously, I have no life.
In the last week or so I have been getting a message on the screen when I am here at AH at random times and at times nothing. Have not seen this at any other place, yet.

"Stop Running this Script? yes or no
A script on this page is causing IE to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer may become unresponsive."

Why now after all this time without any issues? Or, is there another web site problem?

I don't know what's causing that message, but I have a recommendation: use Firefox. I fought that off for years, sticking with IE when many people that I know recommended Firefox. Now that I've switched, I'm a happy camper. I still use IE for some sites because Firefox (or probably the ad blocker that I use) doesn't fully work on them, but it works great for just about everything.

Just a suggestion.

Perhaps it's due to the recent push to IE 8 (at least, I got a version this week with Windows Update).

If there is an add that pops up that Adblock doesn't get rid of, right click it and add it to your scripts.

-Right Click
-Adblock image/script.

Usually these messages are due to errors that are detected within the pop ups or ads on the website (that use Flash, or Java, etc...). You can try re-installing Internet Explorer (Add/Remove Programs, IE8) and then try installing again... but I would go with what Adam says: get a different browser. IE is full of security flaws and random little bugs.

Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ie.html

Google Chrome: http://www.google.com/chrome

Some people prefer Firefox, I however, prefer Chrome... it's fast, easy to use, and very clean-looking :D

Using IE is unwise. Get firefox now or you will wish you had later. IE has way too much power to be used accessing websites.

No one ever recommends Opera, and I've tried every browser under the sun and it's by far the fastest and most stable.

I didn't know it existed until I saw your post.

I'm not up on all the new stuff like you kids are, though. :)

It is the best one I've ever used, but used to be targeted by Microsoft back in the day.

I think computer topics should go in our new computer section though. Even if it's just a non htpc specific question. Let's put them in the HTPC section.:)

Guess what? If the script in question is buggy for whatever reason and causes an infinite loop or is otherwise waiting for something that will not happen in a short time, Firefox will give you a very similar warning with the same options to let it run or terminate it immediately.

The 'solution' is NOT 'switch to Firefox', unless of course you prefer the way it looks or works over IE, Chrome, Safari, Opera, etc. Just like the solution is not 'buy a Mac'. It's not the browser's fault that a Javascript script is buggy.

Unless the browser doesn't follow the standards. It could be the browsers fault. One can't say until you test the hypotheiss.

IE doesn't follow the W3C DOM spec exactly and we euphemistically refer to cross browser development as 'work around IE'. However, that is not the issue here. A faulty script is a faulty script.

I've been working on web related standards since 1996 and have contributed code to Netscape 1.0, 2.0, Mozilla, and Firefox. Trust me...the issues are very complex and it is silly to get involved in 'IE vs Firefox' or 'PC vs Mac' arguments. It's a waste of time.

Great, thanks. This is a new, intermittent issue for me on some pages here, it seems.

I have downloaded Google Earth and I think Chrome a week or so ago, so I will try Chrome and see.

We have one of those sections? :D
I'll have to look for it next time.

Thanks. Since it is new and just a few random events, I will live with it and ignore it for now.

I used Opera from 3.0 through 7. I loved it's mouse gestures but FF plug-in architecture sealed the deal for me.

I actually PURCHASED 3.0...:)
