Pioneer VSX-1019....pphhhhhhhhh!

I guess what I am really beefed about is being spoiled with great receivers over the passed two years and now everyone has poo coming out. I guess a recession can have that effect, it's just so painful to watch.

you are perceptive and Yamaha just did the same thing where up to $600, their units weigh 19 lbs....I would assume if there were true advances allowing the weight loss while maintaining the quality, they would have extolled the virtues of the new designs...they did not....I think the goal is to scare up the entry level price for those wanting to go from mediocracy to quality from about $300 to $700. That niche is small but significant, perhaps 15%. Then the other 85% who could care less about specs will be paying 3-$600 for weak amps and could care less....

Multiple HDMI input is going to be valuable to more buyers than pre-out/in is.

These AVRs aren't 'garbage'.

I feel that they really are compared to models of just a few years ago.
Me, too - but one person's trash is another person's treasure, as they say. I think that krabapple has a point that some people will prefer the new feature set. I think that it's a step backwards (especially losing assignable inputs), but I haven't entered the world of HDMI, yet.

Are you serious?

The Pioneer VSX-1018AH-K is listed as weighting 29 pounds.

How the heck the 1019 could drop to only 19 pounds???
You do realize the bulk of the weight is usually heatsinks, and with increased efficiency comes less of a need for them right?

For $499 msrp you get a receiver that's worth the money. Most people who are going to spend 500 dollars on a receiver don't need pre-outs in the first place.

To call them garbage is a little overboard. Also to everyone who says their old amps were better, you're just holding onto your old amps cause you're old too! Ya oldies!

Like Adam......oldy mcolderson.

I never said they were garbage. Just very light and flimsy...:) Look at the Elite line-up. They all weigh 30 lbs plus..

819 in my future

I'm considering getting the 819. Looks to be a rather feature laden AVR for a very reasonable price. I for one am not interested in pre-outs, but do care about features such as the iPod compatibility (I've got kids and iPods at home), HD audio codec support, 3 HMDI and all I need is 5.1.

For around 300 bucks give or take, I can't find anything to compare.

I'd love to see an innards shot of the 1019...Would quite revealing I think.

No 1018 but I can provide one of the 1015 (four year old model, very robust).

I was hoping that you'd post that. I didn't feel like searching your posts for that image (which I remember you putting up earlier). Thanks!

Well, the heavy part is usually the heatsink(s) and the transformer(s).
The transformer in my 805 is over 20 pounds (perhaps closer to 25).
And the 805 was selling for only $449 at one point! Total weight is 51 pounds.
If I want more HDMI (which I don't), I can always buy a separate HDMI swicher with 6 ins and 2 outs (about $79).

Now, the word "garbage" is not part of my vocabulary. The word most closer to this will be trash. But I only use it for my own trash, as home dispensable.

And you don't need to be old to own an old amp. As a proof, my neighbour's kid is 18 years old, and he recently bought an old Denon amp from 1973 at a garage sale for $20 (integrated amp with main in/pre out).

And me, I got a brand new cell phone just recently released. It has more features than any receiver on the market!

The Onkyo 606 at $319 has 4 HDMI inputs. And it is 10 pounds heavier too.
It is a 7.1 receiver. It has decoders for the new HD audio codecs. It is iPod capable too. It used to be $299 at one point. I bet that it will get back below the $300 price eventually. Oh, it also has Audyssey 2EQ for automatic room correction (up to three measurement positions for better averaging).

The 606 is about $342 shipped. The 819H-K also has HD decoders. The 606 is only 5 lbs. heavier. 819 also has 2 preouts for expansion to 7.1. Not implying that it's better than the 606 (probably isn't), but you know. Doesn't sound too shabby.

Again, weight does not equal power. My ancient technics integrated weighs more than a small fridge and put's out a massive 20 watts/channel.

Ya, some tube amps weight close to 100 pounds and deliver 4 watts per channel into 4-ohm loads!

Everything else being equal, talking common sense, year 2009, class A/B receiver amps, the Pioneer VSX-1019 does not hold a candle compare to Onkyo TX-SR606, Marantz SR4003, Yamaha RX-V663, Denon AVR-1909 and Harman Kardon AVR 254.
