well im not to worried on power part, obv the lower energy the better. but im talking quality, of audio and video from the player to the ps3, obv the ps3 has the advantage of playing games also. but in my situation i am leaning to better overall quality. if there isnt much of a difference then it might even be worth going for the ps3?

also wondering if you get DD true hd and DTS hd through the ps3?
From what I understand of the PS3 it sends the audio 7.1 analog over via HDMI. Therefore if your receiver can handle it this way you should be ok.

Here is a thread related to this subject:

ok well i havent bought the new receiver yet, but the one im buying should handle it all. here is a link for it. http://www.yamaha.ca/av/Receivers/HTR6290B.jsp so the ps3 should be able to handle all the new codecs and play all the same audio as the panasonic? i just dont want to be loosing out with going with the ps3 over the panasonic.

Simple, either the player or the receiver will have to decode. Just buy the receiver and you'll be all set;). Since your asking all these question, I would like to ask one, whats with the red chicklet because IMO you ask perfectly redundant questions that can be easily answerd with a simple search?

i still dont understand that chicklet thing, maybe im just retarded lol, as for that link, thanks, but there is a lot of bickering in it and no one really seems to pin point the whole DTS HD thing, people say its in a firmware update, some people dont? sorry if im just not getting it.

I am using my friends Sony BDP-s550 and I think it works pretty well. I am using the 7.1 analog outs for the Audio, and I can't put my finger on it, but my sub doesn't sound the same.
I have heard this complaint a lot. I run my S550 audio via HDMI. I do have the Sony do decoding so I can get audio in PiP (I have not had the time to do extensive testing, but the decoded pcm of dts HD-MA seems to sound the same as my Yamaha 663 doing it)

Now the point of this post: By default the Sony has Dynamic Range Compression (DRC) set to "Auto". This means if there is no dynamic range compression info from the disc it defaults to "Standard". Either way, Dynamic Range Compression is going on. Set this to "Wide". That should open up your lower end. For more info, check page 50 on the manual.

No you would need to send the audio and video over HDMI if your receiver decodes it, or if it will accept 7.1 analog over HDMI, from my understanding this is the only way the PS3 will send it, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
The optical and coaxial cables don't have enough bandwith to carry an uncompressed audio signal.

Murl, you are basically correct in what you said, I just wanted to make on clarification: When uncompressed PCM is sent over HDMI, it is still a digital signal. So, if you receiver can accept multi-channel hi-res PCM (say 96k/24 bit, though most Blu audio is 48k/ 16 or 24bit) your receiver still can do all bass management internally without doing ADC then DAC. Using the analog 7.1 out is kinda a last resort if your receiver cannot accept Hi-res multi channel PCM (std pcm is 48k/16bit CDs are 44.1k/16bit)

And yes, hi-res multi-channel pcm can only be sent via HDMI. Coax and optical cannot transport them.

the two panny's

The panny 35 vs the 55 wouldn't make a difference if you had a reciever such as the denon 2308ci correct? because the reciever decodes the audio from the HDMI. So in that case, there is nothing else i need to do. The HDMI wire from the blu ray to the reciever and then HDMI out to the TV correct?

You probably need to enter the set up and tell it to send the raw audio signal over to the denon via hdmi. I don't have a panny 55 but I have used the sony version and you have to change a few things in the set up. Maybe another member that has one will chime in.

Correct. Digital audio output= Bitstream and BD-Video Secondary Audio= Off, from your Panny player Menu Audio settings. ( Also, make shure the Dynamic Range Compression is set to "Off" and the Pcm Down Conversion is also set to "Off", again from the Panny "audio" settings).

Happy listening.:)

Correct on both counts. The BD-35 will do and your connections suggestion is perfect.

Question about version 1.7/1.8 on the BD55.

I'm running version 1.6 on my BD55, and I don't have any problem at all.

Should I update to version 1.7 or even version 1.8?

Will I gain anything? Advantages or disadvantages?

Thank you,

Bob

I have never updated the firmware and haven't had any problems. Well one which was a freezing issue on a rental copy of the Dark Night but the disk was the problem.

I would also be curious on the advantages of the updates.

What update is in it? Any problem with the DD TruHD or DTS Master? I think I had to update to get them properly.

There is no problem whatsoever about Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA with both Panny BD35/55, even from their very first firmware, which I believe was version 1.3.

All the firmwares (1.5, 1.6, 1.7 & 1.8) were mainly for playback of certain discs.

I never had a single problem with my BD55, unlike my Sammy 5000.

You are absolutely correct, my very bad:mad:
I confused the issue with the XA2 that I didn't bother to upgrade the firmwares as it worked fine with DD, until I upgraded my boombox setup:D
Thanks for catching and the opportunity to clarify this.

You upgraded your boombox and only tell us now?
I hope you are enjoying the audible differences from the upgrade:D, hopefully improved sound quality.:D:D
Well, it does decode the hi def audio formats now:D
Maybe I should think about posting some pictures, finally?
