UFW-10 - Need an amplifier

I just purchased a used UFW-10 without an amplifier (I don't have it yet though). Has anybody replaced the stock amp with a different one and if so which one? I am considering external subwoofer amps as well as sealing off the box and making whatever internal plate amp I choose into an external amplifier. I don't know if the subwoofer is 8ohms or 4 or maybe even less? I have an email out to A.V.1.2.3 to see what they say.

The only one I have found that is close size wise is the Dayton SA240, while not as powerful as the stock one it is very close in size. However 170 watts (8 ohms), probably not enough for this class of sub but might be ok considering the small size of the room?

Next up and closer in performance to what comes with the sub stock is the Dayton HPSA500 which is 273 watts (8ohms) or I could go with the 500 watt (8ohms) for even closer performance but at too high a cost I think.

I'm open here to other brands etc.. this is going to be in a 10x10 room so it doesn't need huge power. It will be hooked up to a Marantz SR-18 AVR with X-CS Encore mains, an X-CS Classic center with X-LS classic rear channel's. I know the stock amp comes with a PEQ but I don't think this is a requirement here.

Here is the UFW-10..

How about purchasing an external Behringer pro amp, they are very popular around here, although the larger ones are much more powerful than what you need..

Like Behringer Europower 1500, don't think they are more expensive than the plate amp's you need....? well, I really don't know this, well.... and it may power a seond UFW-10 if you should be so lucky as to get one more sub later.

EDIT: Oh well, the plate amps are cheaper, but I guess the Behringer easily outperform them......

This is $439, but it's stereo amp that may be bridged

Plz tell us how you go, will be very interesting to hear more.....

I'm waiting for the sub to get here Monday before deciding. I have yet to find out the cutout measurments so I'll measure it and decide next week.

Thanks for the info.

Definitely.... go with pro amp rather than the plate amps.... they provide rock solid stability and probably better sound quality

The amplifier came in today.

Here is the sub, I had to use drywall screws because the gasket was so thick. It turned out tight and solid. I'm working on testing tonight, I'll post back when I have it in place an dialed in.

Here it is with the Dayton SA240-B installed.

I made a video of the UFW-10 during testing. I have been playing this thing hard for 3 hours with no cutoff or distortion. The video may sound a bit distorted but thats because my digital camera was not meant to try and capture audio like this. I think the video will convince you the Dayton is the right choice.

I used the Crystal Method "Tweekend" and if that doesn't test the nuts of a subwoofer I don't know what will.

Here is a link to the video UFW-10Subwoofer Test, by the way, the digital camera does a pretty good job picking up the bass, but it does break up a few times and distort (not the sub).
