I know it's early, but what's the feeling about the new Denon 1610CI vs. the Oppo BDP 83? My last DVD player was a Denon... my only exposure to Oppo is what I read on the boards.

I haven't seen or heard anything about the new Denon, but after messing around with the BDP-83 this weekend, I sincerely doubt the Denon will be able to beat it. I'd have to see it to believe it.

I have a regular Oppo 970 and it is by far the best DVD player i have ever owned just first rate picture quality and I have no doubt that with how long Oppo has taken in revisions and not releasing till it's perfect that it will be the Bluray Player others strive to achieve.

One word: Oppo :) And I am a fan of Denon's players as well. For that pricing, the Oppo is going to offer a lot more than what the 1610 will.

Thanks, guys. Both the Denon I had and the Oppo I'm looking at seem more substantial on the outside than the Panasonic BD60 I had been considering. (I'm not a fan of flimsy boxes or transport mechanisms that don't hold up.) Of course, the quality of the electronics on the inside matter even more. The Oppo specs look impressive. I'd be running it through a 2009 Denon AV Receiver using HDMI. Are there any known compatibility issues?

The transport mechanism of the Oppo doesn't feel that solid on any of the models IMO, but I don't think that is a big issue. The unit itself feels pretty solid. I wouldn't worry at all about the Panasonics, as they are widely regarded as the best among the less expensive models; in fact, I would recommend the Panny over the Denon as well.

has anyone actually seen this Denon? Isn't it tough comparing something that ~500 people have with something no one has?

It has a good video chipset, but based on other specs I can't imagine it is going to dramatically improve on the last model from them or any that are on the market now.

From what I've seen, the new Denon is supposed to be out in July. I asked one large online Denon retailer about it last night - the person I spoke with had no information on it yet. The good news is that I can afford to wait - my room is under construction. The complication is that I got one of those Oppo emails, so I could order one this week. Decisions. Decisions.

If you intend to do DVD-A and SACD, then that would sway my decision. If you don't need those two in addition, then your range of choices is wider.

Good point. This player will be part of my media room set-up... mostly movies. So far, I haven't felt the need to explore those enhanced audio formats for music. However, I suppose that hearing the difference could make me want it.
