I suppose that the Toshiba that you mentioned is XDE500. How about the Marantz DV4001? It sells cheap too..

Yes it is. I don't know anything about the Marantz. It may be as good or better but I have no idea. Regarding the XDE, I can understand why a lot of people don't like Toshiba coming out with the XDE instead of BD players, and I won't be surprised if it gets some bad reviews. I can also tell you from my own experience as a user of HD DVDs (with ABT), BD (with Reon), plus another 6 DVD players including a Denon 3910 that the XDE offers the best PQ with the "sharp" mode on and second or third with that feature turned off. It is not an edge enhancement as some reviews suggested, it really does enhance PQ overall. I use this cheap player all the time now to play DVDs, saving my HD players for BDs and HD DVDs only.

But the XDE also can play regular DVD, right? I'm not planning to get BD player yet since it's still quite expensive and I might get a PS3 instead in future. So between XDE and Denon 1940, XDE is preferred?

I wonder how the Marantz performs...

Actually it only plays regular DVD, not HDDVD. It offers much better PQ than my Denon DVD 3910 so I am pretty sure you will prefer its PQ to that of the 1940. The 1940 can play SACD and DVD-A so if that's what you need, go for it, just don't expect it to get you any where near the PQ the XDE does offer.
