Pros and Cons of Amp replacement

I still have my first sub, which is 12" downfiring with a 175 watt plate amp. It is 15 years old now and I don't want to part with it. The sub sounds good. My question is would I be gaining anything by replacing this amp maybe with a 500 watt amp or is the box tuned to this amp.

I don't think it's a good idea. It's very easy to blow subs.

I do not see any harm in increasing your amplifier power. As long as you keep your gain down and don't run past distortion you should have no issues and I believe it would improve your performance.

I do have an extra channel 350 watts of my power amp. Could I hook that straight up to the sub without damaging the speaker? Most likely I have to put a crossover in there some where. What would it take to make a passive subwoofer out of this one, with external power amp, or should I leave it the way it is. I am not using anyway, just like to play around. Maybe I am just wasting my time.
