My buddy whose the sniper, over the years has shown me some of the gear they use and the high powered sights, and at 30 yards (the distance from the US warship to the pirates boat) those pirates would look like giant pumpkins in some of the sights. I have seen sights that can project an invisable laser on the subject (even in darkness) and the snipers go through training day in and day out, so that it becomes second nature. My buddy was telling me about how they had a hostage situation years ago and took the suspect out with a high caliber rifle through his ear canal, Guy didn't even have a chance to even flinch with his hand on the trigger. One shot, lights out.

What you're talking about is an IR laser (typically referring to the Insight model commonly referred as the Pec-Q) It's a laser beam only visable with night vision which is obviously a huge tactical advantage. These units are often combined with IR Illuminators which is basically like an invisable flashlight - it's a wide beam laser that illuminates an area and can only be seen with night vision.

For a 30 meter engagement, they likely did not use any really high-powered scopes because you lose field of vision in a targeting situation like that with something 6x-12x like they would normally use. A typical setup for smoething like what would be a an 4x ACOG or lower power traditional scope co-witnessed with night vision. You're buddy will be able to give you exact details on what they probably used. Post it up... I'd like to know.

I like the old fashion method they used during medieval times to defend castles - pour boiling oil on the invaders as they’re scaling the walls.

Without a doubt there will be a movie about the whole event coming up in the near future. I'm no casting expert but my #1 consideration for the ship captain role would absolutely go to George Clooney.

Nope, it can't be Clooney. He already played the role of a Capt. and he got everybody killed.:p:D

Clive Owen for the role.

Itschris, I aksed my coworker about the sniper thing, but I know nothing about guns, so he started getting into real technical weapons and scopes which went about ten feet over my head. All I got from the conversation, is that the weapons used were very precise and the men very well trained to get off three simultaneous shots on wavy water. Overall kudos to those sharp shooters.

My consideration was based primarily on the resemblance (maybe is just me) of the two and the fact that Clooney played the role of a Captain before, in spite of Now Slappy's disappointment with the outcome of the TRUE STORY movie called " THE PERFECT STORM ". I love virtually all kinds of movies especially true story-based, but despise politically biased ones as politics in general being just some of the things that I try to escape from when watching them. I can probably count on one hand how many actors (from Hollyweirdwood) political views share my sentiments but I'm making an effort every single time to disregard them (not easy) for the sake of my entertainment value if nothing else.

"US military wouldn't even bother coming" .......I believe they didn't ask what was our Captain's politics before the real deal and I'm sure they'd do the same for a movie if needed but maybe I have more confidence in their attitude that comes with professionalism than you do.

Regardless who's in it when the movie comes out....
.....Enjoy the flick....:)

Hey DTS, I was just kidding around. No harm intended.:D

I'm well aware of the perfect storm, because I lived through it. At the time I was working for a ferry boat company out of Hyannis on Cape Cod and remember sitting at the dock and listening to the radio and distress calls. (We had to stay on the boat through the storm in order to adjust the lines due to the storm surge.)

I was just trying to make light of the current conversation, not in any way trying to make light of the tragedies that occurred during that storm. Sometimes my humor doesn't translate well across a keyboard.

Once again, no offense intended.:D
