Movie moments that startled/scared the bejeezes out if you

The Exorcist when the little girl "crawls" down the stairs crab-style, or when she spins her head around. That movie is so awesome, but it's so messed up at the same time.

The last one that I can really remember was in the movie White Noise, the guy is watching the monitor for anything different, and the woman jumps up at the screen. I think when my wife jumped, she actually landed on the floor

I watched The Strangers last night,I jumped a couple of times and that is unusual for me

These two movies:

Event Horizon (1997) -- now I know what's coming, but it's still pretty sick
The Others (2001) -- this movie is perfect; it doesn't matter how many times you watch it

That movie was a very pleasant surprise.....IMO.

My pre-watching expectations were rather low for this movie, but it easily exceeded them on all counts.

The Others didn't surprise me at all, though the audio was excellent and cinematography was decent. It had some good moments.

In Flight of the Phoenix (BD) when the tank of fuel blows up as they are working on rebuilding the plane. Man that scene totally surprised me. 'Bout did a backwards summersault when it blew....
