How can i blow up my SUB?

I doubt that. How can you be an audiophile and have significant hearing loss?

Many have very acute hearing and can't even listen to music at a loud level without experiencing pain.

Because listening for long periods at low levels does the same damage as higher SPL with shorter duration. I know the owner of a shop here and he has hearing aids in both ears. I also can't see how listening at low levels captures the experience the way a live performance does. A kick drum at 80dB is never going to have the same effect as 95dB and many people don't consider 95dB to be loud. I'm not saying that anyone should go balls to the wall in order to enjoy music but some things will never sound real unless played back with some "authority".

I guess it depends on your definition of audiophile- it doesn't necessarily exclude any type of music to qualify.

There are some videos on youtube of people destroying subs, I know there is one where a JL W7 gets plugged into a wall socket, and another of a funky pup being set on fire. Not sure about any HT subs being destroyed, but I wouldn't be surprised to see that.

I play at a lounge one night at 90dB with the bass a little turned up to give the room some dynamics at a low volume. The next day my ears are fine, not even fatiqued. Another night it starts at 112dB and goes to 122-124dB by the end of the night on the dance floor (levels are lower in the booth). I wear ear plugs though, but when I was younger I didn't. I found out that it actually helps me DJ because my ears distort or something once the level gets too loud. I also find anything about 115 a bit uncomfortible. and anything above that I find painful.

When I was in high school we went to a career day thing for an afternoon. We went to various booths and little demos but there is only one I still remember. Some of the guys from Elemental Designs(I live in Iowa) had a demo, they talked about how most high performance wires were BS and power ratings on subs were usually potential maxes, not anything you can actually run them at and to prove their point they took a sub(don't remember brand, just some car audio sub) and hooked it up to an amp and the advertised power handling and fried it in under 30 seconds. It was quite entertaining.

If he drops the subwoofer into the bathtub plugged in there are three things that could happen: The first is the GFCI outlets will kill the power before anything happens, this is the most likely case. If there aren't GFCI outlets, or they don't work, and he drops it in and there is any water connecting him to the bathtub he could get electrocuted. Third, and extremely unlikely because of the first scenario, the subwoofer blows.

I imagine half the people in this forum have losted a significant bandwith of their hearing. Especially those who have Dual SVS PB-13 Ultra's! I wont even mention Mike_C who probably has to wear hearing aids with all the subs he has in one room.

Have any tech info concerning the firepit suggestion...? how about connection to the rock club pa...? thanks for your time

i just got a chance to do this. right now i have all of my speakers disconnected and have the sub settings at max (onkyo settings) the sub itself is full, i have 20hz playing loop, gonna plug in a shirt or something. its been like 5 mins, i just felt a decrease in the volume/rumble.

did it for about 30 mins and nothing then stuffed it with a shirt and after 15 mins it would turn off and then turn on again on its own, still it sounds good. gonna do it all day tomorrow.

That sub probably doesn't have enough output @ 20Hz to generate the heat neccesary to fry it. Try a little higher freq.

like do u mean go lower then 20hz or above at like 30hz,

this is really pissing me off. i did it for another 2 hours today, it would heat up and turn off for like a min or so and then would turn on itself.

IMO, if your folks can't distinguish how a busted subwoofer sound, how will they realize the subwoofer is off/broken?
