Where is OPPO's Blu-ray?

Since they are already a direct to consumer company with good sales to back up their product line, I doubt a group buy would do anything. If anything, we would need a few HUNDRED people signed up before they might even consider giving a discount. With the market the way it is, we might actually see it come out at the low end of their estimated pricing, but it will still be hard to get a hold of one initially IMO. With the way things currently are, I will have to put my purchase of one off for a few months now.

You're probably right, but I'd be in on that group purchase too, if it happens and is worth it!

cheers,

My guess is they will sell rather quickly as did their flagship SD dvd player when first released. They aren't a new comer like TSC or EMP who has to heavily discount their product to get it into the hands of consumers to generate buzz. If they are victims of the recession and the players aren't moving it would seem like a good move to offer a good buy discount to get a few into the homes of folks who are frequent posters.

And I know what I'm talking about 'cause i had an econ class in jr college :D

Actually, I'm still on the fence about the BDP-83 because I own a PS3. However, I do love my toys! If I'm going to own a stand-alone BDP, it might as well be one like the Oppo. I'm still interested in the group buy if that becomes an option.

If they are going to do it, they likely won't allow it on the first run.

Maybe by the 2nd or 3rd firmware update!
I have a PS3 and I want this player also.

Recently they haven't been doing so much on the firmware update front. I am not even sure there were any for the 980H.

OPPO BDP-83 Blu-Ray Player Early Adoption Program

Here's an e-mail I received tonight:

OPPO BDP-83 Blu-Ray Disc Player EAP

Dear majorloser ,

We would like to thank you for the tremendous feedback that we have received from the community in response to our first BDP-83 Blu-ray player notification update. There were many great comments, suggestions and concerns which we will try to address in the release of the BDP-83. In particular, we would like to address the Early Adoption Program.

We have decided to take a democratic, by-the-people approach to the implementation of the Early Adoption Program. For the initial batch we will randomly choose 50 customers to participate in the Early Adoption Program. These 50 customers will have the opportunity to purchase the BDP-83 for $499 before the official release. After using the player for about a week, they will be required to vote on whether the program should be expanded or suspended based on end-user experiences. If a supermajority (at least 70%) votes in favor of expanding the program, we will expand the Early Adoption Program by another 100 randomly chosen customers. The player will be shipped with a pre-production firmware version. Firmware updates will be available from time to time.

The initial 50 Early Adoption Customers will be chosen no later than February 25th using the random number generator at random.org. After being contacted by us, the customer must place the order no later than 3pm February 27th Pacific Time; otherwise the opportunity to participate will be passed on to another customer. A simple "Yes" or "No" vote on whether to expand the program needs to be cast no later than March 15th.

Terms and conditions for the Early Adoption Program, as well as the current program status, can be found at our web site:
http://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-83/EAP.aspx
We would also like to take this time to update you on the status of BDP-83 developments. The last two months have been very fruitful, as the player now supports BD-Live (Profile 2.0) and can internally decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio formats. DVD-Audio has yet to be implemented through firmware, but we are working diligently on this feature. A preliminary features and specifications list will be available on our web site on Tuesday March 3rd.

Opt-Out:

If you are still interested in receiving communications about the BDP-83 and participating in the Early Adoption Program, no further action is necessary. Otherwise, please click on the SafeUnsubscribe link below to decline participation and to opt out of any further e-mail communications regarding the BDP-83.

Fellow Audiophiles, it's been a month now and I'm getting impatient!! Any news? I have been scouring the OPPO site as well as others and all is dead quiet!

Starting to think the Pio 51FD will do the job (at $399)....kind of like the drunk sailor who thinks the last ugly broad in the joint at 5 AM looks good enough to take home...:D. Someone talk me off the cliff ARGHHH!!

Check out the other Oppo thread, as there are members who have them as part of the Early Adopter Program.
will do! Read some of the 1st wave EAP's and only saw 1 comment from the
2nd wave last week so I'm looking forward for more.

Agreed, how long will this second wave last, and will then there be a 3rd wave.

I really don't want to buy another gaming system for my 1st Bluray player, and now I have my first 1080p plasma....

I'm getting a bit spooked reading all the evaluator 'no' votes on Oppo's website and am starting to wonder just when this product will be released. I've been ready to buy one asap, and I guess I still am, but I'd much appreciate a list of comparable Blu-ray players in the $500-$1k range, in case the wait continues. I'm ready to buy one.
Thanks in advance

Fed up with the wait. I pulled the plug on a Panasonic BD-60 from Amazon. Just have to do without DVD-Audio in the living room for awhile. May get the Oppo later and retire the panasonic to the den but more than likely the media center technology will make blu-ray mute in a few years.
