Netflix increases price on Bluray, from my lovely email---

"The charge for monthly Blu-ray access on your 4 DVDs at-a-time (Unlimited) plan will increase from $1 a month to $5 a month. The price of your 4 DVDs at-a-time (Unlimited) plan is not changing and remains at $23.99 a month."

I'm getting two BR at a time and haven't received any email like that.

I use blockbuster since I can do instore exchanges for blu rays at no extra charge, and even though they changed their policy to not ship the next movie until you return your instore rental, it still works out really well for me.

You will soon, I have the same plan and I just got the following email:

You are receiving this email because you added unlimited Blu-ray access to your account for $1 a month. The number of Blu-ray titles has increased significantly and will continue to do so. As we buy more, you are able to choose from a rapidly expanding selection of Blu-ray titles. And as you've probably heard, Blu-ray discs are substantially more expensive than standard definition DVDs.

As a result, the monthly charge for Blu-ray access is increasing for most plans and will now vary by plan. The charge for monthly Blu-ray access on your 2 DVDs at-a-time (Unlimited) plan will increase from $1 a month to $3 a month. The price of your 2 DVDs at-a-time (Unlimited) plan is not changing and remains at $13.99 a month.

The new charge for Blu-ray access will be automatically added to your next billing statement on or after April 27, 2009 and will be referenced in your Membership Terms and Details.

If you wish to continue unlimited Blu-ray access for $3 a month, you don't need to do anything. If not, you can remove Blu-ray access anytime by visiting Your Account.

If you have questions about this change or need any assistance, please call us anytime at 1-888-923-0898.

Yeah, they must be email blasting all the members. I wouldn’t mind so much if I didn’t have to wait longer to see the BD I have on my list:mad:

Am I right in saying it’s next to impossible to contact Netflix?

I got a similar notice from Netflix. BTW - I am grandfathered in on an old price structure (I have been a member since Oct 1999).

I've had to call them a couple of times and there was a very short or no wait to talk to a live person. This was ~6 months ago so YMMV.

I hate blockbuster and they don't tend to carry as many of the off the wall movies I like. So netflix will have to go even higher before I'd ditch them.

I have to say after watching a couple of bluerays on my new htpc I'm hooked on the quality.

Netflix raises pricing for Blu-ray access

I just got this email:

It kind of irritates me, but the price is still lower than buying one movie so I am not too concerned over it. So far the service has been excellent and I will continue to use them for now, though I don't think this email serves to really justify that increase to me. I read here that they were looking at changing the shipping packaging for BDs, so it would make a little sense to increase it, but at the same time, I haven't had a problem yet and I rent almost exclusively Blus from them.

On a related note, I just got a flyer from Hollywood Video that they were dropping their prices by almost $2 per rental, Blu-ray included.

I canceled for 3 months when it went up $1, but later decided $1 was fair. But now I might just walk away completely. If they are anything like Blockbuster they probably don't even pay for the disc - just a per rental fee. That was Blockbuster's business model. I guess that between now and the 27th I'll just have to make up my mind which goes away - drop HBO and Showtime, or drop Netflix, or drop both and buy videos. For what Netflix now charges for 3 at a time w/BD I can buy one BD video a month. If I drop all of my premium DTV channels and Netflix I can just about buy 3 BDs/mo. That almost sounds like the best plan. :D

Screw Netflix!!

They throttled the hell out of me the last time I was using their service. With BB changing their in-store exchange policy, I've gone back to renting from a store, though I haven't rented a movie since I cancelled BB.

I had forgotten about Hollywood Video. Maybe I'll give them another shot. There's one about the same distance away from me as BB. Thanks for the tip John.

I still think they are the best way to rent/watch BDs.

my 2 cents....

I only purchase a select few. Most of what I watch are via Netflix.

I started using them to save money and it has worked. The cost of the service, even with the price increased, is still cheaper than buying one BD; and I am watching about 3 a week on a less busy week. Not really complaining, just seems like an odd time for them to increase their pricing - likely due to greater demand for BDs now, so they are going to need to expand on their catalog.

Thanks John for the info. This is one reason I started the Poll on the Netflix vs. BB. That is, I want to save some money as my local BB charges $4.99 for each BR rental.:eek: Watch a few each week and it adds up rather quickly. In fact, I am still researching on which one that will work best for my needs. Upping the game $2 is no big deal to me. It is more about customer service and availability/selection if you ask me. ;);)

Cheers,

Phil

Yep, even with Hollywood dropping their prices, Netflix is still about the price of 3 rentals for 3 times the movies. I can wait a day or two in between, no biggie.

I'm still undecided - trying to justify the $5/mo ($60/yr) higher fee than Blockbuster.

I think Netflix is faster than Blockbuster on the delivery.

I don't know...

It's always a shame to see price increases, but it's not as bad as I was expecting. I'm hoping their reasons are legitimate, and the prices are still better than going to a video store.
