Slim Aluminum Towers vs. floorstanders

Given the fact you have the WAF to consider and that you want a small footprint floorstander that is good with music, the Totem Sttaf is a speaker you might want to give consideration to. Those along with the Totem Mite-T Centre Channel would get you to the budget you're looking at. The Totems are a wonderful speaker for music and they are no slouch in a HT environment either.

I did a lot of auditioning, researching and reading reviews prior to making my final choice. And I can tell you from having lived with the Totems for nearly 2 years, that they are truly an outstanding performer.

Totems

I'm curious on how does the Totem Sttaf handles the low bass and mid-range with a single woofer. I think you'd need a subwoofer.

so far, I'm almost sure I'll go with Paradigms Studio 60 v.5. The dealer didnt roecommend the Milennias (200 and 300) because the drivers fail often. He showed me one with a mid-range broken.

Anyways, I'll go to another dealer, I think I do need to audition the Millenias to convince myself whether aesthetics and performance can be present in these speakers. I'm leaning to performance. Also the v.5 are beutiful: less bulky, rounded, less deep.

It's my impression, but I've read on these forums real men only get big boxes, and that slim tower speakers are 'girly'?

The Totems I have heard have all had a very good low end that realy did not need a sub unless for HT. The Arro was awsome for the size but got a little to foward at higher volumes. The Rainmaker was a bit too laid back but still good bass for me but the Hawks--I believe will be just right.

As a Totem Sttaf owner I can tell you that they handle the lower end and mid-range extremely well. I have yet felt the need to obtain a sub-woofer with the Sttaf's, but you may be different. I am not a bass-freak..I don't long for that thundering sound we are all supposed to experience from the comments I hear. My set-up is geared more for music than HT and that may be the difference, but you'll be hard-pressed to find a speaker that has a better bass response without a sub-woofer additive.

As far as the "girly" aspect or concern you have about the size of these speakers....I won't comment, because that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard as a reason for considering speakers.

My conclusion: Slim Towers not good for music

Hi there, just to let you know after careful listening, reading some audio/electronics books and Internet research I've settled on a pair of Paradigm Studio 60s v.5 and cc-490 center. I came to the conclusion the slim towers are not good enough for music, even with a decent subwoofer compared to floor standers. I found the perfect middle-ground in the Studio 60s, as they are less bulky than v.4s and have increased the aesthetics with a very nice rounded shaped that also helps to mitigate internal reflections.

Great news to be able to make a decision with so many good choices out there. Best of luck!

So doesn anyone own the Def Tech STS's. I went and listened to these again, and i was just blown away! I'm not a big def tech fan to be honest, but these STS's just sound like a completely different animal all together.

I guess im wondering what some down falls to these speakers are.

I've read some glowing reviews of the STS towers from the likes of stereophile and HT mag. It would be nice if they would give up a pair to Audioholics however.
