Video-to-DVD Burn: Poor quality...

Hey A/V 'ers,

When I set up to convert my old VHS videos to DVD I thought it would result in stunning DVD picture quality...

...it didn't. It isn't even near as good as the original video tape picture, which is quite old ( anywhere from 8 - 16 years ).

I'm using an almost new VCR - to a Honestech VIDBOX - to my 6 yr. old Toshiba laptop - to an LG SuperMulti external DVD burner. I was told this system was a better option than the best quality "all-in-one" machine.

Any ideas as to why?

Hi. What quality of video capture did you select (I think the options are Best, Good, and Normal)? Also, what type of cable did you use to connect the VCR to the VID BOX?

Crap in = crap out?

VHS quality can't magically be turned into DVD quality.

VHS at its very best has 240 lines or resolution. Now, you output an already compromised signal through a consumer machine and place it on a DVD, you expect miracles when nothing can be had. Best to find used DVDs of what you have, if they are available. They can be had for almost nothing today

Ordinarily, I'd agree too, but the OP said, "It isn't even near as good as the original video tape picture." If he used an S-video cable (maybe composite would have been okay, I dunno), and used the highest quality setting on his software, then I would imagine that the resulting video should look as good as the original video tape.

Dan, try a higher quality setting on the software, if that's an option.

But yes, don't imagine stunning DVD picture quality when the source material is VHS-quality.
