Both of those companies would be my first recommendation :) SVS PB-10 or PB-12 (or cylinder 25-31PCi) or the HSU VTF-2 MkIII.

I will have to give a nod to what has been said here already...I would definitely look at the SVS NSD series (both box and cylinder)....I have not heard either of these. But I did just put a VTF2 MKiii in my office setup and I have been rather impressed with it given its price....

Would be an alternative choice if he is good with DIY stuff or has the patience to do it. Even though some stuff have kits, it still turns out to be cumbersome to some people.

Right now SVS has two good deals in thier b-stock section--if you can do an oak finish-- the first is a really great price on the new PB12+ for $899 (thats a big discount on that) and they also have a SB12+ in oak for $599 (and this will include shipping I believe)...

The price on the PB is a good deal more than what you said...nonetheless the SB12 is a good price as well...

Just because their page is down doesn't mean they went belly up. They are pretty forthcoming so I would say they would have let people know if things were going really badly. They have a spotty record, but they have been around for a long time and have managed to survive thus far. There is also this on their forum:

Dear Friends:

Our President, Mark L. Schifter will not be available for a short two to three week period of time due to a cardiac related medical condition he is being treated for. Join with me please in wishing Mark a speedy recovery so that he can once again be here and lead our company as he has done for the last 10 years.

It is business as usual at av123, and while all of us have heard rumors of our demise, nothing could be further from the truth. Our business, our suppliers, our sub-contractors have all been here or in direct contact with us in order to improve in the areas where we have needed help and change. Every one of these people are behind us 100%, and have joined in wishing Mark a speedy recovery and back to the office as soon as possible.

Mark will not be allowed any "technology" for a short period of time, so that he may rest, but he has indicated a need in contacting a few of you which given his condition may take a few days. Please be patient with him.

Thank You Very Much

Your av123 Family
My best wishes to Mark and his family.

av123 is no more. They website is down and you should not try and order anything from them.
I do notice that their site is down, but they've also done that in the past. I wonder who is hosting their site? That's pretty spotty.

I just heard on the last AV Rant podcast that they were going belly up.

Well, if they are still taking orders for the MFW I would highly suggest it. It's a good alternative to the same ol' HSU/SVS suggestions. The MFW is a great performer.

Its a good option assuming they have fixed whatever that group-loop 'hum' issue was they were having with thier amps....also read a good deal about amp issues and replacements---hopefully both of which have been addressed. Those issues alone would keep me away from the AV123.

It's a good alternative to the same ol' HSU/SVS suggestions. The MFW is a great performer.
I would stick with the 'same ol' SVS/HSU suggestions' you have gotten as they have a much better reputation of reliability...
