Connecting my laptop to my HDTV.

Okay, I've had a discussion about this before, but thought I should just make a new one. I'm wanting to connect my laptop to my HDTV transferring the VIDEO + Sound to the HDTV. However, I would also like to keep the HD aspect. My Laptop has an S-Video slot. My tv has an s-video slot as well as an HDMI and of course the HD connections in the tv. My laptop has a 7-pin S-Video slot. The tv is a 4-pin. I have the 4-pin, but need connectors, ETC to make it work how I'd like it to work. Any ideas? I need poionted to the correct products, etc...

Do you have a 15 pin connector (3 rows of 5 pins) on the side of your lap top? Do you have a 15 pin connector (3 rows of 5 pins) on the back of your TV? If so I believe you can get 720 out of it as far as picture goes. With s-video you will not get HD.
As far as audio you can plug a 1/8" mini stereo (Male) connector to the head phone jack on your laptop and and 1/8" mini stereo (male) Connector to the TV where it says PC in.

If you would like to plug the audio into your stereo receiver you might be albe to use a toslink to 1/8" Mini Toslink if you reciver has an optical connection.
If your receiver does not have the optical connection the you can simply just buy a 1/8" Mini stereo connector(for the lap top side) that adapts to RCA ends and plug them to a input on the back of your receiver.
Check out monoprice.com for a visual on all cables, connectors and adaptors.(Good prices too!) when on the site search s video and all the connectors will come up. If you have a 15 pin connector (3 Rows of 5 pins)on the side of you computer the search VGA cables. Hope this helps. Danny

I have a Macbook so all I needed to do was buy a Mini DVI to DVI adaptor available at the apple store. Then from monoprice.com I bought a DVI to HDMI Cable (For Video only) and for audio I went with a 1/8" mini toslink to toslink and this was plugged into my receiver (Toslink) and the mini 1/8" toslink was plugged into the Mac head phone jack.

If you do have the DVI use that over the VGA.
Then go to monoprice.com and get a DVI to HDMI cable. That will take care of video only.
BTW What lap top do you use?

Can you confirm you have the 15 pin connector(female) on your laptop and behind your TV. Also how long of a cable do you need? will 6 ft. work or do you need 10 ft. or longer?
Are you going to want the audio to run through your stereo system or do you just want to hear the audio out of your TV speakers?
One thing to keep in mind is where are you going to set your laptop when hooking it to your TV. Also how far away is your stereo system if you decide to run the audio through that.
monoprice.com has all lengths you just have to confirm ALL THESE QUESTIONS and you will have your computer on the tv in no time. It's easier than you think. It just depends on how crazy you want to get. The closer your laptop is to your equipment the better because then you can hide the cables and leave them hooked up and tucked away when not using you laptop on the TV. The whole shooting match will cost like 20-30 dollars max to achieve what you want to do.
I hook up mine like once a week with the kids and play slide shows and watch new movie trailers and the sound is booming out of my receiver. I can help you out in 1 post for what took me a 1.5 months to figure out on my own. Just need all the info.
