Moron alert...aka Read the D**n Manual
Last night my son and I started troubleshooting, and when I tried to hook up the audio via the 5.1 outputs instead of the fiber, things got real weird. I started with the sub and sent the test tone, that worked. Moved onto the center channel, that worked. Tried the rears and I got nothing, I then took the signal from the fronts and ran it to the rears on my surround and I got sound from the rears. I then hooked up the fronts to the fronts and it worked fine. I then hooked up the rears again and I got nothing again. I then turned on the surround in the set up (it has surround and surround rear) and all of a sudden I got the rears in the test mode.
I then pulled out the manual and in the fine print at the bottom of the page (I am looking for excuses, let it go). I found where it says to use the surround speakers for the rears. I tweaked a few settings and things are all working correctly. I even hooked the fibre back up and it works fine too. I have changed the settings and the surround rears are now off and the surrounds are still on.
By the way, the PCM setting had to be set to bitstream as well, I initially set it to Bitstream (Audiophile) but Bitstream (Re-encode) works better for my setup.
Thanks for all of the help, this saved me several hundred dollars in buying an unneeded AVR, but, I will be in the near future to take advantage of the 7.1 and the HDMI capabilities.
Thanks again,.
