bad day at black rock -- LAID OFF TODAY

Sorry to hear! That reminds me of my dad's former job. It was the ONLY division that made their numbers every year. The rest of the company was in shambles. Some CEO killed off his entire division and "saved" the company $25 million on the books. Gotta love corporate!

Good luck and have a (virtual) beer on us!

33 degree beverages are cool... but I would recommend some Bourbon without ice.

Best wishes to you Midcow, hopefully it all works out. Stay positive.

That sucks. I can't imagine 40 years close to retirement and BAM!
I was only 2 years at my last job. Pales in comparison.

BTW... what is LAIDED OFF?

Laid off? :D :D

MidCow2 - wow. Just wow. That sucks, man. I'm very sorry for what happened today. No matter what the relationship is (romantic or business), it's never ideal to have it end when it's not our own idea. Like others have said, though, you've got the right attitude on this. Keep your chin up - you'll get through this. Best wishes, my friend.

WOW, I somehow missed this.
At this point I'd just be repeating the well wishes of others...

Midcow it sounds like you could use a break after forty years.
Relax a bit and regroup; I'll bet ultimately this is a blessing in disguise.
Remember you're not alone!

Regards,
Rick

You have had a nasty shock, but you will be OK. The ones we really have to look out for are those starting out and especially those in mid life with a lot of family responsibilities.

I just home we can catch up to this train, that seems to be accelerating down hill by the day, before it goes over the ravine I don't think it is a certainty by any means.

We have had far too many posts like yours over the recent past. All Americans need to watch each others backs.
You are right TLS I think I am going to be okay. I think my retirement funds are okay. I was just planning on work several more years
:D (0 to 5 ) now I guess I don't have to worry about making a decision

I think you and I are the sameage , did you retire yet ? ( I mean by your own decision)

Thanks

Hang in their Cow. I'm hoping that my belief that good things eventually result from the most difficult of circumstances plays out for you.

That is the funny thing and it seems to hold pretty true. I've always gotten a better job whenever I've gotten laid off, so maybe it is a blessing in disguise Mid :)

It depends what you mean by my own decision, it wasn't really. Unfortunately I developed a health problem 16 years ago. I had my first major surgery at the beginning of 1995 and multiple surgeries in the years following. By mid 2006, I could see my hold on life was becoming increasingly tenuous. This culminated in two huge last ditch surgeries at Mayo Clinic in January and October of 2007. The recoveries were long and I have to say very painful.

Actually after the last surgery, I wandered into this site and it provided a great distraction, and helped wean the narcs, as fast as my physicians would allow. I hate those drugs, and have a hard time wondering why anyone would take them for fun. The last surgery had no procedure code for it, as two surgeons made it up as they went along. My insurer did not want to pay the surgeon's fee claiming the procedure was experimental. After nearly a year of arguing we split the difference.

When it came time to renew my license in December of 2007, the medical board of ND did an investigation of my situation after seeing my health disclosures. Anyhow they declined to renew my license at that time. I was inclined at first to fight it. However after discussion with close colleagues, one of whom was a member of the board, and my wife, I was persuaded to go out to pasture. So I submitted my resignation from the medical staff ten months ago, and my retirement bash was last May. Probably that was wise, as I have had difficulties since, including one hospitalization, especially in the last couple of weeks. A little more medical interference is scheduled for the beginning of next month.

So actually, I have not worked since the end of December 2006.

I can't say I regret the decision. However I have to say the economic melt down is certainly a concern. It probably is to you as well. That as they say is the only fly in the ointment. I'm fine now, but I don't think things look very rosy. There has been too much irresponsibility all round.

Your in my prayers. It's been 70+ years since we have experienced a depression. I think now will be one of those 70+ years times. I hope it's not to the 1930 levels, but it could get really bad. Economic is very cyclical and a look at a lot of numbers indicates to me that we are due for a major recession at the least and likely a depression. I'm glad you have some money saved up. I suggest you ration it as much as you can.

It's still going to get worse before it gets better. I'm hoping the leaders are right and the money supply theory works, but I don't think it will.

Thank you for your kind words. You question probably made me divulge more than I should have. Don't feel sorry, I leaned a long time ago you have to make the best of what you get.

I dealt with a lot of patients, over the years, who had very difficult chronic medical conditions. For some reason there were a lot of those patients that gravitated my way. Among that group I had some good role models, and leaned a lot. So I will be fine.

Well it will be dificult for me to find another job. I was very senior and very specailized. Might be a forced retirement..
Later,

MidCow2

This thread needs some good news so I'll share some personal good news. My layoff was pushed back to at least March 1. It will likely be pushed back beyond that date as well. That is due to increased sales of the F-150 pickup truck. Don't believe the lying consumers that say they only want small fuel economy vehicles. Ford just added a new third shift at the F-150 plant to meed consumer demand for the truck. That's good news for me and should keep me working through the economic recovery, I hope.

Congrats, Dave! That is good news, and thanks for sharing.
Thanks. I'm on that ragged edge where I feel the pain and stress of my fellow 'holics, but haven't had to take the big hit yet. I know it's out there waiting for me and there's a layoff out there with my name on it. I really feel bad that there are others out there that have taken the hit already.:(
